If you’re a fan of the alternate universe Marvel series, specifically Ultimate Spider-Man, you will no longer be spitting out the name Peter Parker. The new Ultimate Spider-Man is Miles Morales, a half-black, half-latino teen who takes over the role after Peter Parker is killed in Ultimate Fallout #4 (released today). And, as most of you probably know, Petey is alive and web-slinging in his non-alternate comic universe.
Remember that Twitter campaign to get Donald Glover considered for the role of the new Spider-Man movies coming out? It had nothing to do with Ultimate Spider-Man writer Brian Michael Bendis’ idea to create an ethnic character to replace Peter Parker. However! When he saw Donald Glover on NBC’s Community in his Spider-Man pajamas it made the idea even more feasible to him.
Bendis said the decision to go ahead with the character change was to keep the Ultimate Spider-Man’s universe full of fresh, new stories. And really, is there a better way to make sure we were getting some positively brand new stories? Bendis also said that Morales will be nothing like Peter Parker. New suit, new kid, new stories.
Spider-Man’s death at the hands of the Green Goblin influences the young Morales to pick up the role. How does he get his powers? I have no idea, but I’m assuming it involves A Radioactive Spider. The character will be fleshed out in the new stories which will start getting published this September.
I will admit, I do have a special place in my heart for that nerdy smartass Peter Parker, and will continue to love him, but I’m excited for a whole new Spider-Man to get to know. What do you think?
