52 Pickup: The DC Shuffle – Wonder Woman

Some of the books in DC’s New 52 are getting more to their roots than others.  Justice League for instance has brought us back in time to witness the birth of the juggernaut team.  Wonder Woman gets to the roots of the character and her connection to Greek Mythology.

The book opens as an unnamed super-powered being claiming to be a child of Zeus hijacks the bodies and minds of three unsuspecting women to act as his oracles.  Throughout the book they speak in riddles (as oracles commonly do) as the scenes of the story play out.

Wonder Woman has a new-ish getup.  She’s still rockin’ the short-shorts and red halter-top with stars all over, but the style definitely has a more modern feel to it.

As the story of issue one unfolds we see a woman draped in peacock feathers, and seemingly nothing else, slaughtering horses to create beasts she can control.  Wonder Woman finds herself battling the centaurs created by the mystery woman while attempting to protect an unknown woman and her god-friend Hermes.

The biggest twist on this story may not have been a surprise to those who are familiar with Zeus and his interactions with humankind…especially the ladies.

There is definitely a return to mythology in Wonder Woman, something that the book had moved away from for the most part in recent years.  I am definitely interested in where this story will progress to and how Wonder Woman will fit into this new world of superheroes.

Wonder Woman gets a KING rating from me!

  1. I do not like Wonder Woman, at all. This book was amazing. I wonder if it deserved an ACE or KING really, the dirty dark gods and the great story line of her protecting someone, I actually want to read this series.
