Geek Book Review: Everybody Loves Tank Girl

Everybody Loves Tank Girl is a collection of the recent 3 part miniseries by Jim Mahfood and Alan C. Martin. Everybody Loves Tank Girl cover (416x640)Everybody Loves Tank Girl is a bunch of short comics that range in length from 1 to 3 pages, with the main story, “Everybody Loves Tank Girl” mixed in. The main story is about Tank Girl babysitting a 7-year-old boy. The other stories and poems cover a range of topics from drinking, swearing contests, relationships, how to dress, and Tank Girl’s hatred of Justin Bieber.

There’s absolutely no cohesion to this book. The various stories and poems don’t tie in together at all. Even the artwork is extremely diverse from page to page. The best way to read it is as if it were a magazine. Read a few pages, then put it down for a while. Trying to read too much of this book at once becomes a little mind-numbing. Some of the comics in this book are humorous and edgy, but a lot of them are completely forgettable. The artwork, however, is not forgettable. It is beautiful and completely chaotic. Mahfood crams so much into some of these panels, they can entertain you for hours.

Everybody Loves Tank Girl 2 page spreadThe book ends with “Jim Mahfood’s Sketchbook” and it is magnificent. So many of the pages of this book, I wish I could hang on my wall. While, I don’t feel the book is consistently entertaining, it does have its moments. If you’re a fan of Tank Girl, you need it. And for everyone else, it’s worth owning for Mahfood’s art, alone.
