Flash Gordon: The Tyrant of Mongo

Flash Gordon: The Tyrant of Mongo

This is a nice little collection of the Flash Gordon strips from 1937 to 1941.

I will not waste time on the actual strip. This may sound harsh but this is more about the book anyways. My big gripe is that they give no background on where the story is. Now I understand that this book is the second one and that they assume you to have read the first book. But, as I have not and may not ever it was a little bit of a bother to just jump into this story seeming like I missed half of it. It would not have been a huge bother for the publishers to have at least put in a good lead-in opener so you knew what was up. If not just for us but for the fan who may pick this one up after having read the first one sometime before. A little back pacing never hurts anyone in this instance and could have been played up like many of the cliffhanger reminders of the day.

Otherwise the printing and presentation was wonderful. I would really recommend this book for the serious or casual fan of Flash Gordon. Plus I would say that not this one but the first book would be a great gift for any pulp fiction fan or a child showing an early interest in the subject. The story is tame enough for the young and full of enough action to keep you wanting more!
