Top 8 Geek Films to Look Forward to in 2013

The new year is upon us and if you read any of the recent lists on our illustrious website, you probably came across the countdown of 2012’s best and worst movies.  This coming year shows quite a bit of geek promise in the cinematic arena.   Thusly, this week I’ll be counting down the top eight movies to look forward to being released this upcoming year.  You probably won’t see many of these movies being nominated for Oscars.  Though, one or two could get a nod.  We’re sticking to pure geek cinema here, folks.  If you’re interested in watching trailers for any of these flicks, just click the image to be directed straight there.  Let’s get to it…..

oblivion

#8.  Oblivion– No, it’s not a movie based on Elder Scrolls 4….as cool as that would be.  Instead it’s a sci-fi thriller based on a graphic novel by Joseph Kosinski.  It will star Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, and Melissa Leo.  Cruise plays a drone repairman living in the skies, along with the rest of the surviving population, above an irradiated Earth.  He begins to question everything he knows after rescuing a strange female from a downed spacecraft.  A $130 million budget provides us with what looks to be some pretty nice looking special effects.  Although, I’m not the biggest proponent of Tom Cruise playing some form of action hero, this movie looks like something I’d definitely be interested in seeing.  It’s scheduled for release on April 19th.

the wolverine

#7.  The Wolverine- This is the sixth installment in the X-Men movie series.  Hugh Jackman reprises his role as the title character, based on a limited series by Chris Claremont and the illustrious Frank Miller.  We will delve even farther into Logan’s back story this time.  As he travels to Japan to train with a samurai and confront a mysterious character from his past.  The scheduled release date is July 26th.

thor the dark world

#6.  Thor: The Dark World- Avengers Assemble!  Chris Hemsworth is returning this year as the mighty Thor in the sequel to the 2011 release.  There are more famous actors in this movie than I can shake a proverbial stick at, but I would like to specifically point out that Christopher Eccleston, or as I like to think of him as…the Ninth Doctor, will be playing Malekith the Accursed.  The ruler of the dark elves of Svartalfheim.  Thor will battle to save all the Nine Realms while also attempting to thwart Malekith’s plan to descend the universe into darkness.  The film is scheduled to be released November 8th.

the hobbit desolation of smaug

#5.  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug– This is, of course, the continuation of Peter Jackson’s attempt to base his entire career and wealth upon Tolkien’s work.  It will pick up the story of Bilbo Baggins and his quest to Mt. Doom.  I would like to point out that Martin Freeman’s Sherlock co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch, will be voicing the dragon Smaug.  Cumberbatch will pop up again on this list a bit later, as well.  He’s going to have a busy year.  You have a while to wait for this one.  I could not find a trailer for this film other than a fan made product on YouTube, so I guess we’ll just have to wait.  It is not scheduled for release until December 13th.

world war z

#4.  World War Z- This is the cinematic adaptation of Max Brooks’ zombie horror novel.  It stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a United Nations worker traveling the globe in an attempt to thwart the impending zombie apocalypse.  The film was scheduled to be released in 2012, but there have been multiple rewrites, setbacks, and reshoots.  This worries me a bit about the final product, although, I have faith in Pitt to turn in an outstanding performance.  They have finally finished the film and zombie aficionados can look forward to its release on June 21st.

superman man of steel

#3.  Superman: Man of Steel- This reboot of the entire Superman series will go back and explore the origin story of the Man of Steel.  It’s directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Dark Knight alum Christopher Nolan.  This film has also had some setbacks due to legal battles over the rights to the classic superhero.  However, those have finally been settled and we can look forward to seeing Superman back on the big screen on June 14th.  It HAS to be better than the last Superman film, right?

iron man 3

#2.  Iron Man 3- Robert Downey Jr. returns once again as Tony Stark to battle Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin, in the seventh of the Marvel Universe films.  It will be based on the “Extremis” series arc and be the first major release, in this series of films, since the juggernaut that was The Avengers.  Favreau has stepped aside as director, but not as actor.  He will continue to play the role of Happy, Stark’s personal bodyguard.  Don Cheadle and Gwyneth Paltrow will also reprise their roles as Shane Black takes over the directorial duties.  You can look for this at the theatres on May 3rd.

Finally, we come to the number one film on my list to look forward to in 2013.  I’ve been touting the release of this film every chance I get.  The geekiest of the entire geek world, can’t wait until the latest installment of this series hits the theatres.  What film could make even geeks look around at their fellow moviegoers and say, “check out that nerd.”  Let’s find out when I reveal the number one film on the list…..

star trek into darkness

#1.  Star Trek Into Darkness- The next film in the Star Trek series, will find the Enterprise being called home.  After returning to Earth they find a seemingly unstoppable force has attacked Starfleet and left the planet in chaos.  The crew of the most famous spaceship in history is tasked with leading the manhunt for the perpetrator and settling an old score along the way.  This film will once again be directed by Lost alum J.J. Abrams and the entire cast from the previous film will be reprising their original roles.  One addition has been made, and it’s going to be a great one.  The aforementioned Benedict Cumberbatch will be joining the cast as the villain.  Whether his name is John Harrison or Gary Mitchell, or even Khan, no one is for sure.  Abrams has been keeping a tight lid on exactly who Cumberbatch will be playing and how the pieces of this story will fit together.  Look for this film to beam into theatres on May 17th.
