Five and five, right guys?! Apple unveiled the new iPhone 5 specs today and it’s not absolutely revolutionary, but it is Apple and they always make good improvements. It is no different this time around. Some of the changes were met with opposition, but in my opinion they didn’t make a bad choice.

Some of the big hardware changes include:

  • A new dock.
  • Larger.
  • Thinner.
  • Lighter.
  • Thinnest LTE smartphone.
  • Camera is now protected with sapphire glass, preventing scratches.

newiPhoneDockThe new dock is called Lightning. (Remember, they also have their other dock called Thunderbolt. They’re creative folks, yeah.) It’s all digital and has has the capability of sending different signals according to the feature you need. It’s also reversible, which means you’ll always connect the cable correctly the first time. The first time! I might be mistaken up there, this is kind of revolutionary.

Apple is also working on an adaptor to make our current docks into Lightning docks. We’ll be looking at those around this years Holiday season.

The camera is still 8mp, but it’s getting better low light features and the Sapphire Glass cover to protect it from scratches. As someone who had to get the back of their iPhone replaced due to a big glaring scratch, which made photos blurry, this is wonderful news.

Like the 4S, it keeps the backside flash, f/2.4 aperture, and the hybrid infrared filter. Unlike the 4S it has a new image processing chip which will help with spatial noise reduction and snap faster pictures. Face recognition for tagging is also included, along with full 1080p HD capture and a panoramic stitching mode. The front camera is also updated to 720p quality video. Below are some iPhone 5 pictures Apple released, and supposedly they are untouched. No low light pictures yet.

The audio received a good update, but any update to that would be better than none. There are now three microphones, with noise reduction. The speakers were increased from three to five magnet transducers, which will give us clearer sound and better sounding audio during calls. The iPhone 5 will also support wideband audio if your cell provider supports it, which is basically better voice quality over the call. So whoever is listening in on our calls can hear us much better now.

BlackiPhoneThe phone itself will boast 8 hours of 3G talk time, 8 hours of LTE browsing, 30 hours of video, and 225 hours of standby. The new processor, the A6, is supposed to be two times faster than the 4S processor and load web pages 2.1 times faster. It will support dual channel 5GHz Wi-Fi (802.11N) with a maximum 150 Mbps connectivity speed.

The screen has changed significantly, with the touchscreen built into the pixels and supporting full sRGB. The pixels will display the picture and sense our grubby hands at the same time. This will result in a clearer picture for us and is integral to the thinness and reduced weight of the new phone. Per Apple, this is the only phone that has utilized this. Before, there was a layer of glass between us and the pixels. Feel those pixels, people. Feel them.
