Since the advent of social networking, there have been a plethora of sites that have come out, vying for our attention. Remember MySpace? Facebook effectively destroyed MySpace and took over as the premier social networking site. Then we have LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, Pinterest, and Ping. None of these social networks seem like a sure thing to topple the king.
Now we have a new kid on the block, Google+. This social network is backed by the second most powerful tech company in the business, and the product is comparable, if not arguably superior, to Facebook. Especially now that Facebook seems to have gotten a little too big for their britches and is bleeding money and members like crazy. Not to mention the ridiculous privacy settings and notorious feeling of good ol’ Zuck just not giving a…well, just not giving too much attention to the complaints.
Google+ has strolled in and has done something that Facebook, for some reason, cannot do. They created a viable mobile app. The Google+ mobile app is gorgeous (the tablet version is even better). I mean, it’s leaps and bounds away from Facebook’s mobile offering. You can video chat with up to 9 friends via a mobile hangout, photos can be instantly uploaded to your page from your phone, and you can message with any or all of your friends at once. Google+ definitely has a leg up on Facebook when it comes to mobile options.
The basic functions of the app are easy to use, and navigating through the app is fun. The only beef that I have with the Google+ mobile app is a big one. For some unknown (and apparently unfixable) reason, I simply cannot share pics or links directly from the internet. I have to copy and paste a link or download a picture then share them as a photo or thought. Every single time I attempt to share via the web, I get a “there is a problem…” message. This seems to be exclusive to my Verizon S3, as a colleague has an AT&T S3 and does not have the same problem.
Other than this single, irksome bug, the Google+ app is a beautiful, fun, easy to use social networking app. It gives you so many options that allow you to get the most out of the app, and the social network as a whole. Because of the photo and link sharing bug, I give this a 3.5/5.
