50 injured, 12 dead in shooting at midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises

Aurora, Colo. — A gas mask wearing gunmen set off tear gas and fired into a crowded theatre during the premiere of  “The Dark Knight Rises” on the midnight of April 20th. At least 50 people are injured and 12 to 14 are reported dead from the shooting. Moviegoers thought it was part of the screening.

He shot people heading toward the exit as he walked up the aisle, and said nothing during the whole ordeal. The shooter, a man in his 20s, was arrested a little after 12:30 a.m. MDT at the back parking lot of the theater in Aurora. He was reported carrying four guns: two handguns, an “AK” type rifle and a shotgun. Police also searched the suspect’s apartment last night since he made a statement regarding explosives being held in it.

His youngest  injured victim was reported to be as young as 3 months old. A witness reported that a girl as young as 9 was carried out of the theatre with a shotgun wound, not moving. Several people in the theatre were treated for chemical burns related to the tear gas. Cell phone video taken by some at the theatre illustrated the panic and screaming from the those trying to evacuate the theatre.

Unfortunately, this area is no stranger to tragic shootings. Aurora, a suburb of Denver, is about 13 miles away form Littleton, CO, site of the 1999 Columbine High School Massacre. If any place in the United States needs a real life Batman, I elect Denver first.

In subsequent news, Warner Bros. canceled the Paris, France, premiere and interviews due to this shooting.

From everyone at 8 Days a Geek, our hearts and thoughts go out to those who have lost loved ones or suffered from this tragedy.
