Geek Book Review – The Comedy is Finished by Donald Westlake

Jesse here, with another mystery novel review for you super sleuths out there.  This time our legal quandary comes from the mind of Donald Westlake.  Here is a quick synopsis:

BUT SERIOUSLY, FOLKS.

The year is 1977, and America is finally getting over the nightmares of Watergate and Vietnam and the national hangover that was the 1960s. But not everyone is ready to let it go. Not aging comedian Koo Davis, friend to generals and presidents and veteran of countless USO tours to buck up American troops in the field. And not the five remaining members of the self-proclaimed People’s Revolutionary Army, who’ve decided that kidnapping Koo Davis would be the perfect way to bring their cause back to life…

The first thing that you notice about The Comedy is Finished is that the character of Koo Davis is a VERY fast talking, yet funny, man.  Even in the face of certain doom, Koo keeps a level head and a sharp wit.  Other characters tend to be extremely erratic in comparison to Koo.  Mark is the psycho of the bad guys group and also the one that pretty much everyone is afraid of, while the other members include the spineless brains, the scared and unstable planner and two women who are just about as crazy as crazy gets.  All of the characters in the book mesh incredibly well together throughout the entire story.

Characters aside, The Comedy is Finished is geared towards readers who want a “no nonsense” mystery novel without a lot of embellishments.  The story is hard hitting and doesn’t slow down until the end, making it a great book for mystery buffs and readers who love a book who’s story could be happening right now.

If you like mystery or are looking for a “new” book to pickup and read, take a look at Donald Westlake’s mystery The Comedy is Finished.  As with all of the Hard Case Crime books, The Comedy if Finished is an adults only story.
