This Week in Games: War, Tennis, Grappling Men

What I want to say:

February 14th is Valentines Day and the gaming community is providing you with a variety of good games to get that special person!

What I have to say:

The V-Day releases leave a lot to be desired for. I like the Wii game coming out, but not everyone will, or would, and Twisted Metal is a pretty popular series… but the rest? Not too much to look forward to. Instead, look for last weeks edition of TWIG (This Week in Games!) and there are some pretty fancy lookin’ vidya games to choose from.

This would probably be a good week to play Catherine if you haven’t already.

Twisted Metal Release Date: Feb 14
Systems: PS3

This is one of longest lasting series Sony has produced for its systems. Clowns. Cars. Twisted Metal. It’s exclusive!

Twisted Metal returns with unhinged car combat destruction and action movie mayhem. A PlayStation franchise exclusive since the release of the original Twisted Metal game back in 1995 for PS1, this most recent release is packed with unique weapons that emerge from demonic vehicles as players unfold the demented tale of a cast of characters, led by Sweet Tooth in story, co-op and online modes. The mayhem is ratcheted up in multiplayer modes with 2-4 player competing locally and up to 16 players online competing in a killer-take-all back and forth battle royale on wheels.

UFC Undisputed 3 Release Date: Feb 14
Systems: PS3, X360

Another sort of alternative sports game to play around with. Instead of tennis pros, you get UFC pros. Pick your favorite guy and grapple. Make the digital men hit each other, roll around, stick crotches in faces. It’s UFC. It’s sweaty man on man action. You either like it or you don’t.

Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 Release Date: Feb 14
Systems: PS3, PC, X360

Another WWII era war game for you war game enthusiasts. Can’t go wrong with nazis and guns, apparently.

Brothers in Arms Furious 4 is a brutal first person shooter offering a refreshing World War II experience with a campaign mode playable up to 4 players in co-op, as well as an extensive competitive multiplayer mode for up to 10 players. The story follows four fierce and fearless soldiers taking on the Nazis in the deadliest war ever known. As one of the Furious 4, players battle using special weaponry and unexpected combat abilities, against the greatest threat the world has ever faced: the Nazi uber-weaponry, the result of the numerous years of experimentation of the Third Reich.

Grand Slam Tennis 2 Release Date: Feb 14
Systems: PS3, X360

Yay, tennis in your living room! Or whatever room you game in. For you hardcore Tennis gamers out there (five or six?) Play as your favorite pros in simulated environments based in real Openings and Tournament locations. Playstation Move compatible.

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action Release Date: Feb 14
Systems: PC

The product description leaves nothing to the imagination on this game. I have absolutely nothing to add because a) it’s a PC game and b) turn based. But there has to be a crowd out there for it, right? Right?

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action is a contemporary remake of the latest title in the much-loved Jagged Alliance series of turn-based mercenary-themed strategy games. Designed from the ground up to offer a modern gaming experience, Back in Action showcases an updated isometric 3D look and interface, highly detailed character models and a variety of new gameplay features. Back in Action takes players to the fictitious country of Arulco, where a ruthless dictator has seized power and only a small group of rebels stand to resist him. Tasked with freeing the island from the dictator’s iron grip, players will command rebel and mercenary forces while using tactical, diplomatic and economic tools to keep troops supplied and ready for the next night, all while commanding them directly in nail-biting battles. Back in Action’s innovative “plan & go” combat system combines real-time strategy (RTS) with turn-based elements to guarantee that the intricacies of tactical warfare are rendered in dynamic, exciting gameplay.

Rhythm Heaven Fever Release Date: Feb 13
Systems: Wii

Rhythm Heaven is a multiple platform series for Nintendo and it is exactly what the title sounds like: a rhythm game. The levels are insanely cute, really fun, or frustrating depending on the song. These games are a must have for anyone who enjoys the weird cuteness of Japan. Good for solo play and group play.
