Geek Book Review: Getting Off by Lawrence Block

Most of what I read is scifi and fantasy, but I do love a good crime novel.  Lawrence Block is an author with enough awards to snap a christmas tree…              Wait that’s medals.  Anyway, he’s good and that’s the important thing.

DISCLAIMER: This book is extremely graphic is several aspects (notice the title) so it is for ADULTS ONLY.

Getting Off: A Novel of Sex and Violence is not what I would call my normal read, but once I got started I couldn’t stop.  Here’s a synopsis from to get you started:

…and when she walks out there’s a man with her. She goes to bed with him, and she likes that part. Then she kills him, and she likes that even better. On her way out, she cleans out his wallet. She keeps moving, and has a new name for each change of address. She’s been doing this for a while, and she’s good at it.

And then a chance remark gets her thinking of the men who got away, the lucky ones who survived a night with her. She starts writing down names. And now she’s a girl with a mission. Picking up their trails. Hunting them down. Crossing them off her list…

Getting Off follows a woman with DEEP seated daddy issues on her mission to kill any man she has ever slept with.  While she kills most of the unfortunate saps right after the act, there are a couple that survive for one reason or another and they make it on to her list; a list of men to take care of later.  While reading Getting Off, you’ll see the main character evolve from a simple serial killer with simple motives to a hyper intelligent serial killer with more quirks than you can shake a stick at.  Getting Off keeps you wondering what the main character will do next, how will she kill the next guy, who will the next guy be?

If you like crime novels, mysteries, thrillers, characters that are deliciously demented, or female lead characters that take control of their own stories this book is the perfect addition to your collection.  Visit the link below to buy the book from
