52 Pickup: The DC Shuffle – Grifter

Probably one of the easiest titles to launch in the New 52 DC Reboot had to have been Grifter.  I can’t claim to be a professor of Wildstorm Universe knowledge, but WILDC.A.T.S. was a solid book where all the characters failed to have much history behind them; that’s what made them cool.

This first issue goes down an interesting, albeit confusing, path.  In the beginning and throughout, Cole Cash (Grifter) is hearing voices no one else hears.  The word bubbles are purposefully done to look alien or creepy, but definitely something strange.

At one point Cash gets knocked out and when he wakes up he is strapped to a table in the presence of what could very easily be something out of the Halo video game series, but is more likely an updated version of a daemonite (an evil creature known within the Wildstorm Universe).

One thing I did find interesting about this issue is that when the “Hooded Woman” shows up, it’s actually at an important juncture in the book.  It’s not important at the moment, but it becomes defining later (see below).

It seems that whatever is going to happen in this book surrounds these voices and Cash’s connection to them.  He was intended to be a host for one of these creatures but he escaped, now they hunt him to kill him, while the government hunts him because they consider him a danger to national security.

The book didn’t blow me away.  It didn’t even really stand out.  It made me curious to see where the story goes; so that’s something.  But I could honestly take or leave the book and not be that affected.

For those reasons, but upgraded due to solid art and interesting direction, the book gets a QUEEN.
