52 Pickup: The DC Shuffle – Green Arrow

With all the changes in DC’s New 52 Reboot it’s comforting to know one thing remains the same: Oliver Queen is a cocky son of a bitch.  It’s hard to imagine him any other way and it would have been a travesty to make Ollie a kind-hearted, likable character in this re-launch of the Green Arrow title.

In a solid mix of young and established talent the book showcases J.T. Krul teaming up with Dan Jurgens and George Perez.  Once again it’s good to see DC bringing up the new guys on important books but it’s nice to know there’s a steady hand there to guide them.

Green Arrow does a solid job of explaining the dynamic between Ollie and Queen Industries.  It’s very clear that he wants his new technology line, Q-Core, kept far away from the main company.  The reasons are not specifically disclosed but at least there’s an established base to work from.

Krul does a nice job of matching Ollie’s technological savvy with the world of today.  In this first issue Arrow is set in France where he’s hunting down criminals who have made a name for themselves by recording their illicit actions and posting them online.  Ollie breaks out some new gadgets to deal with these foes.

Ollie has always been a nitty-gritty character, though, and Krul doesn’t miss that part of his demeanor.  He even keeps some old tricks in the bag, using plain-ole-regular arrows to take down one of his opponents.

One of the themes running through the book is that Ollie is looking for ways to keep Green Arrow on the cutting edge.  He needs the tactical advantage since, like Batman, he’s just a guy running around in a costume with some nifty gadgets.

I’m happy with where Green Arrow is heading and I think this has the potential to be a solid book.  Perez on art and Jurgens being part of the team lends a lot of credence to this book.  I look forward to keeping an eye on Green Arrow as it progresses.  For now, it’s earned a KING grade from me!
