We’ve lost a Lost Boy. (Too soon? Maybe.) And yes, while he technically wasn’t one of the “lost boys” in that movie… well, most of you get it. He’s the kid on the left in the picture. He was a teen idol in the 80’s, along with Corey Feldman. Over the past five or so years he was involved in a few different shows and movies, and was starting to get more and more involved in the movie industry. How many of you love Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1 & 2? Well it’s developer Infinity Ward is having a few family problems.  On March 1st G4 broke the story of Jason West and Vince Zampella (the two minds behind the Modern Warfare franchise) had been fired by Activision.

No one knew what was going on at “The Ward”, at one point Jason and Vince were in a meeting the next there were “bouncer looking guys” roaming the office.  The next day  Activision issued a press release assuring fans that they have big plans for the Call of Duty franchise.  Activision also released the news of a new COD game coming in 2011 as well as a new take on the franchise from one of their newest studios, Sledgehammer Games. They also confirmed that Jason and Vince are in fact gone from the company.

On March 3rd Jason and Vince issued a press release stating that they were suing Activision for the events surrounding their termination.

On March 4th, a memo leaked from Activision hinting on to the company looking for “documents regarding West and Zampella’s communications with Activisions competitors, including but not limited to Electronic Arts.”

What are you thoughts on this?  I think that Activision was simply trying to cut out the middle man.  Also I think that Activision wanted to do  another Modern Warfare and Jason and Vince wanted to go a different direction.

Any way you slice it we need not cry for Jason or Vince. I guarantee that their phones are ringing off the hook with studios and company wanting to grab up the brains behind MW.  We here at 8DAG wish them the best of luck and look forward to playing their next masterpiece.

Deadline Hollywood had some great info for me about some epic movies now being optioned.  Soon after Natalie Portman optioned Pride, Prejudice & Zombies with David O. Russell  looking to direct, Tim Burton and Russian director Timur Bekmambetov have plans to produce Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which was just came out a couple of days ago, The story is this,  Lincoln’s mother was killed by Vampires when he was young, so his determination to beat the South during the Civil War wasn’t because of  slavery or states’ rights, but by motivation to destroy all the vampires who flocked there. Cool right?

UPDATE: Everyone can start coming out of the bunker now.  No official word has been put forth by Sony but it appears that PS3 systems affected by this bug are beginning to work again.  No patch or firmware upgrade was needed.  If your PS3 has suffered from this bug leave a comment telling us of your ordeal and if it started working again for you.

ORIGINAL STORY: For a day now PSN, the Playstation Network, has been of the fritz; throwing the error 8001050F and telling PS3 owners that they have been signed out of PSN.  However, if you own a model older than the new PS3 slim Song has advised that you don’t even turn it on.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

Some of the problems encountered include:

-The date being reset to Jan 1, 2000
-Loss of trophies (this is the worst from what I’ve seen)
-Not being able to play games rented from PSN before their due dates

We’ll keep you updated but as Sony says, they are working on the problem.

I have disconnected my PS3 from it’s network so-as not to encounter any of these issues, but without PSN what use is a PS3?  Here’s to hoping for a quick solution.

The First Item: Joe Johnston briefly walked off the set. Marvel told him that his budget was too high, and a pay cut might be in order. He didn’t like that. Both sides came to an agreement, or something along those lines, since Johnston returned to the set and production commenced once again. (Filming starts in June.)

The Second Item: CBM reported that someone had been cast as Steve Rogers—information from an inside source– and later retracted the story, deleting it from the website, but not before a few big movie gossip and news sites got to it. They did say to regard it as a rumor, so… who was it?

When WB assigned Chris Nolan the job of spearheading the reboot of the Superman franchise, We all figured he’d be hiring some of his familiar friends.  Latino Review states that Allegedly  David S. Goyer, who wrote Batman Begins and helped with the script for The Dark Knight, will be writing the new Superman, titled Man of Steel. Read my opinion below.

Is this good or bad? The guy wrote the Blade movies which were good, but he also wrote the David Hasselhoff Nick Fury movie which was not good, he wrote Jumper which was actually a well written movie just poorly acted out, but then again he wrote a whole slew of the Demonic Toys movies, so you decide, what do you think? I say yes, for two reasons, first and most important this guy cares about the characters, he helped pull Batman away from the nipple suits and neon lights and put him in a dark city surrounding, where he belongs. Second, the friendship between Nolan and Goyer could mean a collaboration to fuse Batman and Superman into the same universe, it seems hard but if anyone can do it it’s these two.

So it seems that the females of Red Dead Redemption aren’t going to sit back and watch all the men folk get in on the action, they want to participate too. These ladies aren’t stuck on the farm or just dancing in the Saloon, they’re out and about with weapons of their own, fighting their own battles, hunting their own big game. (Except for the nuns, they might not have weapons.)

New games are, on average, around $60. I’ve always wondered what makes them that particular price, and this chart gives a rough answer. The post from the LA Times blog is below the cut, copy pasta’d from the source.

Much of the data came via a slide shown Thursday by Steve Perlman, founder of OnLive, an on-demand video game service based in Palo Alto.

Perlman, who spoke during the Design Innovate Communicate Entertain Summit in Las Vegas, showed the slide as part of an update on his company’s service, which is expected to launch later this year.

Another way to look at it is to say publishers such as Activision and Electronic Arts receive $45 after retailers take a $15 cut. Publishers turn around and pay a $7 licensing fee to console manufacturers such as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. The cost of making, packaging and shipping game discs to stores carves up another $4. Finally, not all games sell, so the expense of returning unsold inventory eats up another $7.

That leaves publishers with about $27 per disc sold for development, marketing and other expenses. These are, of course, back-of-the-envelope averages. Each of these numbers can vary. For instance, a publisher could negotiate a smaller licensing fee with console manufacturers. And by deploying the Goldilocks method of inventory (not too much, not too little), they can also minimize returns. Tinkering with the margins in these ways lets companies tune their bottom lines.

First, a potential release date for Project Creeper. (Yes, I changed the nickname – it’s my nickname for it, I can do that.) Jonathan Ross of Friday Nights with Jonathan Ross tested out Creeper and the Xbox with one of the sport game demos from last year’s E3. He later updated his twitter with a message that basically said, I’m paraphrasing here, “Natal is impressive, not quite there yet, but they have until October to get it right.”

We already know Microsoft was advertising a Holiday 2010 release date, and this falls in line with that information.

Now, for the price?

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter says Natal will retail for $50 in the US. That’s a guess, mind you. After speaking with his hardware specialist colleagues at Wedbush, he came up with the figure.

In his show he said:

“I’d be very surprised if the thing is more then $79, and I really think it’s going to be $50. Microsoft’s not trying to make money on the device, trying to get everybody to have the device so that they can sell us other things, eventually can sell us a lot more Xbox 360s.

“My call is $50, I think that’s where it’s going to be launched.”

Remember this, Microsoft has not given Creeper a an official price yet, so this is merely a (well respected, arguably) analyst’s guess. We don’t even have Creeper’s proper name yet, but that’s coming in June.

Over at MTV Multiplayer, Russ Frushtick got a chance to play with and observe the Hand Ball demo for the Creeper and experimented with just how close the motion capture is to real life movements.

I had a pretty large sample size, sitting through 5 demos, capturing about 40 different movements from a variety of journalists. Across those 40 movements, the fastest life-to-screen transition was .08 seconds, while the slowest was .12 seconds. A tenth of a second was the consistent average, though.

Creeper isn’t an instant capture. Most cameras aren’t, so this makes sense. Only being off a tenth of a second isn’t bad, though. And this is only the beginning of Creeper’s hardware life, so this gap could get cut down considerably, much like the Wii did with MotionPlus.

The demos that Microsoft are allowing people to play for the camera are pretty limited, so there might be even less of a delay than that… or not. We won’t really know the specifics of Creeper until it’s in homes and people are using it, and writing about it.

James Swan is 27 and lives with his grandpa, mother and five young children. He likes to play World of Warcraft and sometimes get drunk while doing so.

On one of those nights his mother asked him turn the volume down at around 10 p.m. so everyone could sleep peacefully. He didn’t. She asked again and this made him angry. He proceeded to grab his mother by the hair and throw her onto the bed. His little brother tried to help the mother, James did the same thing to him.

His mother managed to run to the kitchen and grab the phone. James decided to rip the phone from the wall because of his WoW-induced rage and then proceeded to smash his head through the drywall to prove some kind of point. (Was it, “Hey look, I get unreasonably angry over little things and now I will hurt everything!!”)

After he was done with that, he started to choke his mother until she blacked out. During said choke-fest he said he was going to kill her. His grandfather came into the room and tried to get him to stop—James also said he was going to kill him too. Grandpa got a revolver from his room and the two men struggled with it.

It went off.

A bullet grazed James’ head and went out a window.

James was taken to the hospital where he refused medical treatment and was promptly arrested for the assault.

I don’t know where to start with the commentary that’s running through my head, so I’ll type out the one that is the most prevalent: CRAZY MAN NEEDS A STRAIGHT JACKET.

This game… it intrigues me. It calls to my Western-loving side, and I can’t resist indulging in that side of me. (Off topic: Try to get a hold of the movie Sukiyaki Western Django, it’s amazing fun.)  This game also looks a lot better than Red Steel. Check out the trailer below.

Kotaku points out something interesting: Sonic 4 is not being developed by the Sonic studio team.

Rather, it’s being developed by Dimps,  who worked on Capcom’s Street Fighter IV and developed Sonic Advance, A Good Sonic Game. They are a company that is known for good 2D games, and have developed products that the Sonic Liking Community generally hails as good.

Sega handing off the game development to a reputable 2D company is a good thing, since the Sonic team-developed games of late have been mostly not that great. In short, a Sonic game with the Sonic Team stamp isn’t all that important, we just want a good Sonic game, and Sega Japan seems to have realized that.

While playing Modern Warfare 2, a Texas teenager told his Canadian party that he was going to take a few guns to school, that he would get from a Marine friend, and shoot a pregnant girl and his best friend. He also said “that because SWAT may be on the scene within 10 minutes, they would have to aim for the head.”

The Canadian gamer called the local police, who called Microsoft, who linked the gamertag to the boy in San Antonio, Texas, where the local police were notified of the threat and acted accordingly,

The 16-year-old boy, was arrested and suspended from school invariably, AKA expelled. A locker search turned up nothing and the kid “was very remorseful and very scared,” according to a spokesman for the school district. (He probably wanted to crap his pants.) The spokesman also said, “We believe that the boy truly was sorry for what he was doing, but in this day and age you have to take all of these kinds of verbal statements, these verbal threats, very seriously and he’s going to have to learn that the hard way.”

The San Antonio Police started the investigation as soon as they received the phone call from the Canadian authorities. I’m not clear what his punishment will be since he’s underage, but since a school was involved the charge is a state jail felony, not a misdemeanor.

Sony’s motion dildo will get an hour long programming session at the Game Developers Conference on March 11. Some Sony guys will explain what is going on with Gem Arc (its maybe name) and as soon as the news hits the web, I’ll report back here with what I’ve learned.

Session Description
The soon to be released Motion Controller for PlayStation 3 will allow developers to create new game play experiences, by allowing players to interact with their console in high definition using their bodies. The Motion Controller uses 3D position and orientation tracking, camera input and a controllable RGB LED to bridge the gap between camera, motion and traditional interfaces.

Basic Information:

In Fable III you’ll be the son or daughter of the hero from Fable II. You can be good or bad, you get the dog, there’s co-op and multiple plot paths.  Albion is now heavily industrialized and the denizens are not doing well, it’s up to you whether you change it or not, since you actually become the King or Queen of Albion. Molyneux thought this would piss gamers off: No more HUD, health bar, etc. (I could barely tell how much health I had in Fable II, so I don’t really care.)

Characters will bulk up according to the type of fighting/weapons you use. Heavy weapons will make you a heavier character, magic will you make more shiny (I am guessing, with that one), guns will make you a little slimmer. Mix and match your weapons to get different results. How many followers you have is the closest thing to XP I can find. Be a good leader, get a lot of followers, the more powerful you’ll be. Emotions and expressions are an important part of this. There’s something new they’re progamming in. Touching. It’s literally touching, like holding hands, dragging, etc.

There’s some weird things going on with the weapons, I’ll explain more at a later date when the information comes out. What I do know is this: your alignment and what you kill effects the weapons. If you kill innocents, the weapon will look decidely evil, if you kill evil enemies, your weapon will look, for lack of a better description, good and shiny. Weapon titles will also be tied to your gamertag.

There might be Creepy (Natal) stuff integrated into the game. I really, really hope it isn’t. Despite myself, I’m liking the game as is.

The first Developer Diary, or Episode One as it’s titled. Peter Molyneux and the crew talk about game details, show the new “extreme morphs” expression, morphing weapons, touching your girlfriend, and other things that look pretty. (Plus: you can see a puppy!)

Project Creepy (Natal) might have a five year life span after it gets released this Holiday season, according to Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg.

He said this to CVG regarding how long Project Creepy will be around:

"The richness of the technology is going to really enable experiences that never had existed before, and we’re not just speaking about what we’re doing this year, but I think two, three, four, five years from now as this evolves.

About motion controllers and Creepy’s capabilities:

"We obviously could have done a motion controller if we’d have wanted to do that, but we felt that would be a much more interruptive experience. We had an opportunity here to really do something that’s transformative and brings a whole new category of experiences to life.

"Now we’re saying to creators: ‘We can see when you move your hand, when you move your feet, we can track your body. I can stand in front of this sensor and it can recognize my face and know if it’s me, or my brother or my sister.’”

Greenberg also said that the camera is still in its codename state. The full name could be revealed at E3, or later. (And if it weren’t for 8 Days, I could care less.)
