With the holiday season upon us, television takes a break to allow viewers to spend time with their loved ones. But when you’re a television junkie like I am, you find yourself also looking back over the past year on the small screen. What worked and what didn’t (manly men shows certainly didn’t!). And while it’s incredibly hard to sift through such a wide array of programming to find the best, I’m going to do it anyway. I’m a giver like that. To give it a little focus, and considering this is 8 Days a GEEK, I went with the top eight shows that fit that weird little niche of entertainment called geek culture. Good thing I’m a geek myself. This might have been hard if my favorite shows were the CSIs and Two and a Half Men!

8 ) Thundercats (Cartoon Network)
Animation has been coming on strong in recent years, but no revival was so well put together than the rebooted Thundercats. While the original was a toy-based weekly smash-’em-up, this reboot has taken a lot of inspiration from the long-form storytelling popularized in Japanese anime. While there are still several done-in-one stories, these Thundercats are a small band of survivors. Their home was destroyed by Mumm-Ra and the Lizards, and now they wander this planet filled with varied creatures and dangers.

7) Stargate Universe (Syfy)
If you’re a fan of dense and complex multi-layered science fiction, then Syfy isn’t really the place for you. Caprica and SGU were the last two attempts we’ve seen, and neither fared very well. It’s a shame, because in it second and final season, SGU started turning in some of the best science fiction stories I’ve ever seen. It lived up to the potential of Star Trek: Voyager’s premise, while creatively keeping those continuity ties to the long-running Stargate franchise. It’s just a shame that it’s death seems to have killed the entire Stargate line, not to mention leaving the fate of the Destiny and her crew in permanent limbo.

6) A Game of Thrones (HBO)
I didn’t think high fantasy could work on television, as much as I’ve wanted to see it tried. When I first read George R.R. Martin’s epic saga, I thought this might be the first series that could survive a television budget, as its use of magic is far more subtle than many other popular series. I just worried about its more mature subject matter. It couldn’t have found a better home than HBO, who treated the source material with a reverence Terry Goodkind’s The Sword of Truth didn’t get, and resulted in a critically acclaimed drama — one of the most compelling on television — that just also happens to have elements of fantasy in it. It’s success may have paved the way for the more mainstream successes of Once Upon a Time and Grimm (I’m still waiting for those to live up to their potential).

5) Doctor Who (BBC America)
In his second season, Matt Smith firmly settled into the role of The Doctor, while Amy and Rory have quickly established themselves as two of the best Companions we’ve seen in a long time. It’s nice to see The Doctor just being friends with his companions. This season also saw the culmination of the River Song story that’s been brewing since David Tennant’s era, and it’s fully satisfying and as mind-bendingly weird as you might have imagined (Can we get a chronological collection of her adventures now?).

4) The Walking Dead (AMC)
While The Walking Dead let up on the terror and horror in this first half of its second season, it did a great job of giving us more of what AMC has become famous for in its other series. We started focusing on these characters and their relationships. Running from zombies is all fine and good, but it means a lot more when we come to care about this band of survivors. And while it may have taken a bit to get there, the reveal at the end about Sophia and the barn massacre were worth the wait, and certainly left me chomping at the bits for the continuation in 2012.

3) American Horror Story (FX)
What The Walking Dead did for zombie movies in the long form television format, American Horror Story did for ghost stories. Now that we know this is a done-in-one season, we can look at it as a singular story, and those closing moments were all we may ever see of the Harmon family and Murder House. There are many questions, but we got our happy endings, and the writers did a great job of spacing out the reveals throughout the season to keep us jumping on the edges of our seats. Plus, Jessica Lange’s Constance was absolutely the most terrifying and most dangerous presence in the whole series, and she wasn’t even a spirit!

2) Beavis & Butt-Head (MTV)
Maybe I’m dating myself here, but the original run of Mike Judge’s titular idiots was one of the highlights of my teen years. Beavis & Butt-Head and Ren & Stimpy were the funniest things I’d ever seen at the time. And as much as I loved their adventures, I loved even more their MST3K takes on music videos. Now they’re back and poking fun at videos AND MTV’s horrible slate of reality shows like Jersey Shore and Teen Mom? Yes, please! Now with sharper satire than ever before, and plenty of laughs (both from the characters and from us watching at home), this is easily the most welcome return to television since Futurama and Family Guy before it (sorry, Ren & Stimpy, but your short-lived return in 2003 was kind of terrible!)

1) Community (NBC)
For “Remedial Chaos Theory” alone, this show deserves to be on a geek-centric list. That episode followed seven different timelines based on the roll of a die — parallel universes, people! Anyone who is a fan of geek culture and television who isn’t watching this show is missing out on one of the smartest shows on television. They took three seasons to make a Beetlejuice joke, and Abed sports a Batman costume. While it doesn’t wear it’s geek badge on the outside like The Big Bang Theory, Community is so much more clever and brilliant in its writing. I’d wager that more geeks are flipping away from Big Bang and finding Community (of course they air opposite one another) a better flavor for their viewing palette. I know I certainly do. Now all we have to do is cross our fingers that NBC will return it to the schedule — and maybe in a less brutal time slot.

What shows topped your viewing lists for 2011? What shows disappointed you tremendously (Terra Nova — though you did get it together a bit by the end of your season (too bad nobody was watching by then))?

8. Nightwing

Nightwing, a KING rating in my original review, breaks into the top 8 because of the true quality of this book. Taking the Dick Grayson character and moving him out of the Batman role and back into his Nightwing role is a task. This book drew me in with solid art, an interesting storyline and the intrigue of the other Bat-Title tie-in of Dick being implicated as a killer. Check out my review HERE.

Check out my full review HERE!

7. Justice League Dark

Justice League Dark, the highest KING rated book to make the top 8, was very close to being an ACE. When the book was originally listed I was skeptical, but after reading it I am on board. The coolest part about this story is that it’s reaching into the magical part of the DCU, which is something that has been largely overlooked in recent history.

Check out my full review HERE!

6. Batman

Overall I had six books I rated at ACE level. Batman comes in at slot six on this list of the best books DC put together for the reboot. It’s in this book that we find the Nightwing tie-in with Dick Grayson being implicated as a murderer. Batman has some seriously intense moments and as the book that really showed Bruce back in Gotham as Batman again it has a level of intrigue above the other bat-titles.

Check out my full review HERE!

5. Superman

Superman brings us into the present with the newest version of Superman. Action and Justice League being set in the past Superman is the only book where the character is showcased in present-day DCU. The issue brought all the new facets of the character to light: Lois and Clark are not married, not even dating, the Daily Planet is a changed place and is rapidly going in a different direction than Clark wants it. All in all Superman brings the man of steel down to earth a little.

Check out my full review HERE!

4. Batman & Robin

As is to be expected the Batman and Superman connected books are a big part of the DC’s New 52 Reboot and I took point on them the next two books play a big part of that. Batman & Robin slides into number four on this list. This issue teams Bruce with his son Damien as Robin. A paring that has existed before, but here Bruce is taking a much more heavy-handed father-figure role in Damien’s life. For those of us who read Batman back in the day when Robin was being broken in, we remember how Bruce used to be…it’s even worse now. And Damien is so much more experienced and wild than any Robin ever was. This title could prove to be the best title of all in the DCU a year from now, only time will tell.

Check out my full review HERE!

3. Superboy

It seems that Superboy will have a lot less to do with Superman than it will be Connor or whatever name this new book decides to give to the Human/Kryptonian hybrid. What really propelled this book to the number three slot is two things: first, Scott Lobdell does an amazing job creating genuine interest in this character and second, the cliffhanger moment at the end that puts Superboy in position to be a villain.

Check out my full review HERE!

2. Catwoman

This book was downright fantastic. Catwoman has so many strong points going for it. Judd Winick is writing. Selina is even more in touch with herself…innuendo intended. Catwoman and Batman get it on, costume style. And despite every fanboy hating on it while secretly whacking off to the tonnage of cleavage jumping off the panels of this book, the story behind the boobs is incredibly solid and intriguing. Love it or hate it, Catwoman is a book to pay attention to again.

1. Aquaman

No one is more surprised by this ranking for this Sub-Mariner rip-off. But Geoff Johns taking the reins on this book has brought the character to his true prominence. The fact is Aquaman is a badass. He’s incredibly strong and near-invulnerable. Johns does a fantastic job of playing up the fact that everyone thinks the character is a joke, even going so far as to have Aquaman go into a seafood restaurant to eat lunch and end up getting bombarded with asinine questions from another patron. I can admit that I wasn’t very excited about this book, even knowing Johns was writing it, because I’ve never been a fan of this character. But I was blown away.

When you need to kick ass and take names fast, the best way to do it is in a iconic car. One that that goes down a signature – no, more like a character itself. Here they are brought to life.

#8 The ’67 Chevy Impala from SUPERNATURAL

Passed on from John Winchester to his sons, Sam and Dean, this car is a second generation monster killing machine. The american Chevy is well suited for the wild west-like tv show. A wild steed the boys rely on as they ride into battle. The car became so important that in final episode of season 5 (ment to be the last episode ever) it was written as the “most important object” in the universe. Proven true as it was what saved Sam from being possessed by the devil. Now that is a car.

Bonus Features : A demon proof trunk full of monster fighting tools, including books, rocksalt shotguns, and iron.

#7 Bummblebee from TRANSFORMERS

Your first car should always be a great memory. In the first Transformers movie, young Sam got one hell of a memory when he picked up this yellow scrap at a used car lot. But soon it would lead him on and epic battle between two techo-organic alien races bent one using Earth as it’s battle ground. Bummblebee served as the youngest character with his comedic, but often annoying radio voice.

Bonus Features : Can transform at will into a three story tall battle mecha, complete with blasters.

#7 The Mach 5 from SPEED RACER

Built and driven by a long line of Japanese auto-mechanics, the Mach 5 out races the bad guys who are constantly trying to sabotage the honerable game of racing. Its’ driver, Speed Racer steers it like it was a part of him, and drives this car right into the winners circle and history books time and time again!

Bonus Features : Oil slick, reflatable flats, jump spring mechanism, gps, and many other convenient accessories.

#6 The Mystery Machine from SCOOBY-DOO

When driving around in swamps looking for ghosts you need a great get away vehicle with four wheel drive, just in case you get stuck in some ectoplasm. The Scooby gang chose well in this classic VW Bus. With room for four plus a great dane you have the space you need for cross country travel. Painted in bright colors so it’s always easy to spot in those fog covered areas, and driven but thier fearless leader Fred, the Mystery Machine is more of a home to the gang than a car.

Bonus Featues :Spare tire, Scoody-snacks.

#5 B.A. Baracus Van fron the A-Team

This monster rolls down the block you know the shit has hit the fan. Loaded with four, large ex-military men armed to the teeth and ready to kick some tail. With it’s signature red stripe and fin, it rolled out in the ’80s television show and even made a appearence in the blockbuster movie adaptation.

Bonus Features : Fire proof detailing, reinforced front end for ramming, arsenal consealed in back with wide range of weapons.

#4 The Delorean from BACK TO THE FUTURE (parts 1, 2, and 3)

Everyone needs a car that will take you places. The Delorean time machine, created by Emmit Brown, does just that. Taking young Marty Mcfly to help the teenage version of his parents, all the way to the future, to help his own kids, and even back to the wild west to stage a classic cowboy rescue of his mentor Doc Brown. Though, at times due to it’s need for 1.21 gigawatts and to reach 88 MPH has been hindering to young McFly, Doc Brown had altered his machine time and again to fit whatever needs they require. A truely adaptive machine with a truely awaesome friendship attached to it.

Bonus Features: Suicide doors, Flux compassator, recylable fuel engine, flight capabilities, cup holder.

#3 Black Beauty from GREEN HORNET

Built and upkept by mechanic/butler/sickkick, Kato this black of night luxery car became a rolling beacon of destruction when it hit the streets. The Green Hornet became a hero in villians clothing every night, and he needed a sinister car to match. With an arsenal built in to every corner and it’s wild green headlights, mobsters of the underwolrd to notice as it toured the city. With Kato behind the wheel, he treated it like every other weapon in his hands . . . deadly!

Bonus Features : Machine guns, gps, hornet city camera, darts, oil slick, rebflatable tires, smoke screen, bullet proof, non-hypnosis beams, laser sheilding, airbags.

#2 Eco-1 from GHOSTBUSTERS

When moving into a old busterd up firehouse, the Ghostbusters found this old buster up emergency ambulance. Some might sell it, some might toss it for spare parts, but not these heroes. They turn this baby into a rolling ghost trapping machine! Driven by no particular teammate, it has become as important a tool as the nutron packs or ghost traps. With it’s white and red finish and classic car shapt it stands out from many iconic cars and will continue to do so.

Bonus Features : holdster in back for packs, overhead ghost tracker, Siren loud enough to go on the soundtrack.

#1 Batmobile from BATMAN

Whether you are 6 or 60 at one time of another you have wanted this car. It didn’t matter what mighty version touched your life, this car is the ultimate vehicle. From Adam West in the bat shaped, double domed, car with red pinstripping, to Christian Bales, massive tank roller, this car has alot to offer. No other car has more adventure, danger, and hope than the classic Batmobile. Every new TV show and movie (animated or live action) gave us a new car to drool over with new features.

Bonus Features : oil slick, smoke screen, jet seats, bullet proofing, mini-lab, computer, gps, missles, underwater capabilities, rope hook, reflatable tires, bean bag machine gun, auto drive, and many, many, many more.

Your eyes meet. Sometimes an arguement occurs. Sometimes not a word needs to be spoken. That wonderful one of a kind moment when you are at peace with the one who understands you the most.

I’m talking BROMANCE! Stinky man sweat, hitting the bad guy as one, beer drinking after battle BROMANCE! Here are my top 8 parings of comics.

#8 Hawkman and Atom

They first met During a JSA training session with the JLA. Hawkman was the jock older brother Atom could finaly look up to and Atom was Hawkmans salvation that the JLA wasn’t all arrogance. With them both being Professors at colleges, they shared a thirst for knowlege and even a comic series for years. But thier root personalities couldn’t be more different. Where Hawkman is a hopeless romantic and stoic, Atom is a skeptic to love and often is blunt. But somehow they mesh well together. Many have forgotten what a pair they were untill Blackest Night : Hawkman &Atom oneshot. Here we watched as Atom desperatly fought against the corpse of his dearest friend, promising that no matter what, he would bring him back. True bromantic moment.

#7 Wolverine and Nightcrawler

They say the more things change, the more they stay the same. They must have been talking about Kurt and Logan. Since they met in the forming of “The All New X-men” giant, they have maintained the same steady relationship of beer and prayer for decades. Kurt had never stopped trying to save Logans soul and show him the best he is, can be very nice. Logan, while skeptic of a god who is merciful and kind, never doubts that Kurt is all those things. From defeating mutant killer robots, to long camping trips in Canada, these bros have etablished a long friendship that was tragicly ended when Nightcrawler died saving a fellow x-man. It was only suitable that Wolverine gave the final words at his funeral.

#6 Ironman and Captian America

To call these two a problem pair is just a narrow definition. Ironman was starstruck on first sight with our Captain, but soon conflicts arose in the early AVENGERS comics. Who should lead the team? Who is best suited for press releases? Who’s turn is it to punch that guy? Eventually like all couples over time they settled into a nice stride in their realtionship. Steve was the heart and Tony was the Brains. But niether knew that their biggest test to true brotherhood could lead to the demise of one of them. CIVIL WAR put bro against bro and lead to the death of Cap. After Steves resurrection, Ironman and Cap had a rekindled bromance that streached across a mini-series with Thor called AVENGER PRIME. True bromance never dies.

#5 Dr.Mid-Nite and Mr. Terrific

Some Of the best bromances come out of the workplace. With both Mid-Nite and Terrific prefering the lab to the battlefied, they grew to repect and admire one another above all others in the JSA. Both carrying strong legacies and emotional losses they are the indiviually great characters, but can seem cold and hard to understand to others. Together though, they develope a great back and forth that builds them up as better men and heroes. But they are not entirely all alike. The athiest Terrific often scofs at Mid-nites unwavering religious belief. Some of their most intimate bro-scussions are about this conflict. Instead of ingnoring thier differences they embrace them about one another.

#4 Spider-Man and The Human Torch

These two New Yorkers have been fighting since thier college days. Over girls, money, who has it easier, and even over who has the cooler powers. This rivalry turned in to epic bromance with pranks, shoulders to lean on, and even with the one in a while dubble date. With the Human Torch holding a secret man-crush on the thrilling Spider-Man, and Spidey longing for Torches adventurous lifestyle, they can both hang out tand talk about what the other envys in the other lives. Thus making them appreciate it even more. I and sad to report that with the passing of Human Torch earlier this year, this bromance enden in tragity. Yet as a sign of respect Spider-Man took on his place in the FF.

#3 Superboy and Robin/Red Robin

It’s not only in teen romp movies tha the school jock befriends the nerdiest boy in school. Superboy with his movie good looks and powerful endless powers, but arrogant personality and adverage intelligence. Robin with his amazing detective skills, sharp mind and martial arts he had to hone everyday. Logicaly there is no reason these two should be friends. But from thier early careers in leather jackets and green tights- to blue jeans and cowls, these two have kept their bromance strong and fresh. From day one these two have always been there for eachother. With Robin losing his father in CRISIS of Superboys path of self-discovery about his Lex Luthor DNA, they have to kept a strong friendship alive even through Superboys death AND return.

#2 Green Arrow/ Green Lantern/ Flash

Some people are ment to have one bro stand out in thier life. This is the lists only threesome. It originaly starting out with Green Lantern two timing his bros with eachother. One day on the streets of Keystone, laughing it up with the all-american bro next-door the Flash. Then later the night watching a boxing match with the fiery playboy bro Green Arrow. Somehow Green Lantern was able to keep balance for years. Works in JLA with Flash, have a road trip with Green Arrow. Go on a camping trip in space with Flash, team up to take down Royal Flush Gang with Green Arrow. There was even and entire issue about who was the better bro (see above) resulting in an odd respect of one another. So many arguements have been made about who means more to Hal but I prefer to sit back and believe that this is just a not so rare case of threeway brohood.

#1 Blue Beetle and Booster Gold (Blue & Gold)

The arrogant Booster Gold met the nerdy Blue Beetle in the forming of the new team JLI, Justice League International. With no one taking the flashy Booster or the happy-go-lucky Beetle seriously, they bonded together in a way many bromances , young and old, start. Pranks. Pranks on Batman, on Martian Manhunter, on Mr. Miracle, and of course on Guy Gardner. Sooooo many on Guy Gardner. It didn’t matter to them that no one took them seriously, because they both knew they could lean on eachother. But no bromance no matter how epic, could have prepared them for what was about to happen. Ted Kord, the Blue Beetle was murdered in CRISIS but a former friend. Booster, who was injured at the the time, was the last to find out and it destroyed him. To not only lose your bro, but the only bro you felt you had could cripple a man. Yet the bromance lives on in Boosters’ series. From him trying everything he can to bring Beetle back to life (even tearing apart time), to battling Teds’ reanimated corpse in BLACKEST NIGHT, they even had a few time traveling adventures together. Right now Booster has taken a shine to the new Blue Beetle, Jamie, but we all know that he could never replace Ted in Boosters life. The most epic bromance in the one that continues on years after death.

Any last words on BROMANCE?

In a summer filled with aliens of every conceivable size, shape, and super power, Attack the Block stands out by focusing more on it’s young cast than its quasi-simian extraterrestrials.

Attack the Block is the story a gang of South London hooligans whose neighborhood is besieged by aforementioned aliens. The film begins with the crew mugging a young nurse as she makes her way back to her apartment building after a long night of work. During the course of the crime, a nearby car is destroyed when an object falling from the sky crashes into it. This causes the nurse to escape but Moses, the leader of the group, capitalizes on the easy entry into the vehicle and proceeds to check it for valuables. Here we get our first view of one of the film’s antagonists, a small eyeless gorilla-like creature with rows of glowing phosphorescent teeth.

The effects of the creatures are merely adequate, but the story is so entertaining and clever that you forgive how ridiculous the aliens look when chasing the kids and some of the obviously poor decisions made by the characters. The dialogue is witty in a way only a British film can be, and the young actors easily hold their own among the adults (Though Nick Frost is hard to top). The cinematography is exceptionally well done and makes the film look much higher budget than it actually is.

This is definitely NOT a Hollywood film and as such, there is quite a bit of blood and foul language to be enjoyed. The story even has a few surprises in it, mostly due to the expectations of safety we as Americans give to children in films.

Throughout the course of the film our “heroes” find themselves pursued by aliens, police, and even drug dealers, and embrace the situation with a zeal and fearlessness only a young person could. The resolution is satisfying, and isn’t quite what you would expect, but the surprises are partially what makes this movie so much fun.

I don’t want to ruin anymore of the story, and at only 88 minutes it’s easy to give too much away in a review. But if you liked The Goonies, District 9, Sean of the Dead, or any film like these, Attack the Block is movie you simply MUST experience.

When most people see jason Voorhees, Leatherface, The Candyman, and an army of crazed Zombies, they tend to run the other way. This past weekend hundereds of fans travels far and wide to GET TO these monsters! Yes folks Contamination Con : The Sequel, held at the Westpost PLaza Chalet in St. Louis, offered a wide range of gorey-geekiness. With it’s wonderful layout and well set up viewing rooms, everyone had an easy way to see what they wanted. Whether it was the premier of some new underground slasher movie, a panel featuring your favorite spook in the woods, or even a marathon of short films arranged for the ever busy fan, Contamintaion-con presented them all. This was very refreshing as too many specialty cons (convetnions that are about one select gernre) are sloppy and do not offer much range in activities.

One activity, key word active, was the Zombie Hunt Room. Here one could sharpen thier skills for the inevitable Zombie apocolypse. Placed in a dark room with only your gun and fellow surviors, you went through a maze of destruction never knowing who was waiting around the corner. With flashing lights and frightening noises this little room seemed like a pocket demention away from the well lit hotel were I had just come from. This reporter sadly did not do very well and fell to the zombies quickly. Fortunatly this was not the end of my adventure at Contmination- Con, as downstairs the real monsters awaited.

Horror movies, like their monsters, come in all shapes and sizes. From comedic Evil Dead to panty-wetting Freddy Krueger. All were welcome at this con as well as a few aspiring upstarts. With great guests such as Kane Hodder (Jason Voorhees), the entire 1994 Fantastic Four Movie cast (Including Dr. Doom), Tony Tood (The Candyman, who still scares the bees out of me) ,Brad Loree (Michael fron Halloween Resurection) ,Sean Patrick Flanery, David Della Rocco& Norman Reedus (fron the Boondock Saitns Movies), and various aspiring actresses and porn star celebrities. This was an ideal lineup for a con such as this. They gave what the fans wanted in spades.

I was particualrly pleased to meet one of my all time favorite villainess, the wicked Queen Gedren from the Red Sonja Movie, played by the powerful Sandahl Bergman. She also was the leather wrapped barbarian Queen in Conan The Barbarian.

Tee-hee!

Now about some of these young upstarts. Many monsters find a hard time breaking into the movie business. It is sooo cut throat (get it?) but they try anyway. Instead of sitting around in their dead mothers basement, they set out into the world to become something horror-riffic! For example, The Bloodfest Club is a movie about a Chuck Noris enthused janitor that must save the graduating class from Zombie Aliens. They start next summer and judging by the picture on thier facebook page, this will be a class where everyone buys the yearbook!

Check them out on facebook or www.bloodfestclub.com and support indy horror films!

Some people have already released thier creations on the unknowing public! Darren Dickersons movie D4 is about a covert ops teams sent out to locate a missing child on a wild preservation. Unknown to the team, they are mearly test subjects for a much larger scheme.

Check it out at www.ghostwater.com and buy it today!

Of couse not everyones monsters are ment to make it to silver screen. Some are old school. Using the stage to upstage the competition for main monster! The Angery Young Men LTD. puppest show is something you have to see. Seriously, put it on your bucket list kiddos! This troupe from Milwaukee set out a few years ago to bring something original to horror shows. Thier zombie infected brains spilled out this hillarious thing they call : “The Night of The Living Dead -the puppest show”.

An insperational show drawn from the original Night of the Living Dead realeased back in 1968. See it to believe it at www.angeryyoungmenltd.com

Yes, there was many things to see and do at the Contamination-Con Sci-fi and Horros show. From spotting one of the biggest celebrities in the world, Bigfoot-

To trying out some Contaminated Cake created by the Sugar Artist Eric Woller.

This was convention that held it’s own with the big over the top cons I have gone to. Special thanks to the amazing and heldful staff. Every inevitable problem was quickly solved with a professionalism that is lacking at all too many cons. Last a deep thanks to Master Of Cerimonies Dr. Ivan Cryptosis Curator of the Macabre! Although sounding like Draculas black sheep cousin , he kept the convention entertained the entire show with his jokes and off beat humor.

First of all I just have to brag for a minute! I- met- BRAK! EEEEK! OMG Totaly epic! He poses with me and signed my friends chest! It was AWESOME!!

ACEN also known as Anime Central in Chicago is the largest convention in the midwest. Drawing in tens of thousands of people every year for a decade and a half they know how to pull off a great con. With a monstrous Artist Alley and vendor room, 24 hour video gaming rooms, multiple 24 hour table top rooms, and fantastic con-round anime viewing rooms, this con always has something to do! Although it is called an anime convention, it always in the weekends best interest to attract a broad range of nerds. With horror make-up panels, comic to film panels, and endless Japanese culture panels, Acen had you covered.

Sadly every con does have problems and it seems ACEN still has trouble learning from their mistakes. As a third year Artist Alley attendee I get a great behind the scenes peek at these problems and I am often in the center of it. For the second year in the row Badges, out passes to the con, were withheld, misplaced, unprinted, or just not there. Some had to wait untill noon Saturday to get badges, only to be told that they had the wrong ones! Plus the fun game of “You were in the computer yesterday, but not today”. With staff members in the triple digits you understand that is hard to communicate between sections. But after so many years of doing it, you’d think they would have a better plan by now sides “wait here a moment, I need to get my supervisor”.

One thing ACEN wins at is it’s monster guest list. With so many people in their book it is hard to understand why they need so many. But after reading through the entire program book, I wish to share how ACEN does it right with guests! First we have the famous Soap Bubble Rave( so named because you need to shower before coming and after going) that goes on whether there’s fire, death, riot, or sunrise. So all the DJs that keep this sugar crazed, glow light fantasy running deserve a place in the book. Next we have the American voice actor and international voice actors. This is a main draw to fans across the county. If you have their favorite VA they will come in droves in hope of gaining a sound clip of the insanity. The third kind of guests are the Panel People, the ones who push the con forward. Whether they publish comics, teach samurai skillz, build props, or even play nerdpop, these guests keep droves of fans entertained during the day. All the above mentioned types of guest are necessary for the con. Too many complain not realizing why we have so many types. Now you do so shut-up.

Overall ACEN is a con worth going to at least once. Some find it too big and intimidating, and go back to their smaller more local cons. Others come and become part of the experience year after year. This writer makes the 6 hour drive year after year for mainly one reason. The Epic One Piece Photo Shoot!

The most popular ANIME and MANGA series in Japan has grown a fantastic fan base here in America! Acen is know for it’s fans drawing together for one weekend of celebrating fan bases. Here you can see the above group shot of the One Piece fan Photo Shoot. But they were not the only Group! There were PLENTY of Doctors in the house and at the Doctor Who shoot!

The Punk Rock NANA group posed making all other rock album cover envious!

OH NO THE RAPTURE! RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEKEND THE WORLD WILL END! WHO CAN SAVE US! GO GO-

When Dc announced the launch of an all new Wonder Woman Tv show, mant fans clammored the internet with questions. Who will play her? What will she wear? Will it be any good? Well, now we have the answer to the first two of these questions. Here is Adrianne Palicki in all her wonder!

This costume was modified from the original release back in early March. Notice the change in pants. Aparently shiny pleather top-awesome. Shiny pleather pants-halloween time.

Now the best way to judge this costume is to compare it to the great history of fashion that has made Wonder Woman the icon she is today. First appearing in December of 1941 with her armor clad corset and star-spangled skirt, America was wowed by this Amazonian sweetheart. As strong as Superman and as quick witted as Batman, us gals finaly had a heroine of our own.

This feminine outfit wat topped off with the coolest accessories a girl could want. A magical and unbreakable lasso that willed anyone to tell the truth. Bullet blocking braclets. Also a tiara that always hit it’s mark, fit for a princess of the amazons.

Later in the sixties, she ditched her skirt for a set of star covered spankies, all the better to show off her mile long legs. Also a slight alteration to her cheast plate. Before was a majestic eagle. Now lays the WW symbol mst used to recognize the character. This is the most classic and iconic look. Drawn by top artists and fanboys for decades. Chosen to be the look used by Bruce Timm for the Justice League cartoon series.

She is such a fashion icon that this year MAC cosmetcis released a Wonder Woman make-up selection baised on the comic character. See the comercial here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AIdB_l_s9o

Now we come to the first lady to don the lasso for televison, the great Linda Carter!

The brawn, the beauty, the braclets! Linda Carter had it all and gave her all for three seasons of this show. See the gold pattern on her top is a replica of the golden age Wonder Woman. With a matching belt (always an important fashion yes) wrapped around her tiny waist, and the tiara holding back her perfectly flippd ‘do, no one was most striking. With her blue eyes and wide stance, she truely looked like she was carved from stone and blessed by the gods.

Through the years Wonder Woman has tried many different looks at the whims of artists and editors. Thankfully she always bounced back to her stunning stars and red corset. Then last summer Dc comics announced a relaunch, revamp, and new outfit for issue #600. It has not gone over well.

Her shoulder-padded, black, biker-jacket and painted on pants make her look more urban vigilanty circa 1992 than timless Greek Princess. Dc claims that the outfit had to be so far away from the original we grew up with becasue this wasn’t the same Wonder Woman. Our poor heroine is lost in a plot hole dressed like a dated 90′s mini-series! Who will save her from this fashion disaster? The blue jacked doesn’t go with the outfit at all and seems to keep the best parts hidden. Her sectioned red corset is the one salvagable piece. It emphasizes her feminine side while still adding theat, “yes I can kick your ass” attitude. Don’t get me started in the shoes.

As fans wait for our princess to return to us as we knew her, we are given the new Wonder Woman Tv show oufit to mull over. Braclets? Check. Tiara? Check. Lasso? Check. Patriotic colors? Check. Amazonian armor? Check.

So why are fans pulling away from this outfit? Bashing it left and right? We waited 9 long seasons to hope to see Tom Wellington of Smallville don his tights, only to be let down time and again. Here we see it right away and yet we seem disapointed. I think it is not the outfit we fashion fans are saddened about, but the woman inside. Hear me out, Adrianne Palicki is a beautiful woman. Very classy to be sure, but she lacks the most important quality in a superhero/superheroine.

Power! We have yet to see her inner Amazon break out. She looks the part but we have yet to see that factor of a person who can kick your ass. Simple as that. Still images can only give us so much. As fans who have built up Wonder Woman in our minds for years, we need to see her attitude in movement and action to be satisfied. Linda Carted proved herself from pin-up girl to Wonder Woman on the screen and it is only fair we give this new Wonder Woman the same chance.

Look for it in 2012 on NBC.

The massive, marvelous and mighty C2E2 attracted guests, attendies, and vendors that lived up to it’s name. With heavy hitters in the comic world such as Brian Michael Bendis, Garth Ennis, and Adam Hughes. Plus literal heavy hitter Chris Hemsworth who will be playing Thor on the big screen this may, C2E2 pulled out all the stops to make this one of the best conventions in the mid-west!

I started my journey in this comic domain, with a live show put on by the Ghostbusters : Chicago Division “Your Ghostbustin’ Troop Outside Da Loop”. A fantastic choice I believe to kick off the con. I watched as they discussed the many ghosts and demons they have vanquished on behalf of the great Windy City. Werewolves to ghosts to a beast names Pyrosis who tried to enflame the city just this past year! To have the convention arrange for us to meet such great heros was above and beyond! They even showed us their latest containment device for holding such monsters.

Unfortunatly the EPA (Enviromental Protaction Agency) showed up to shut them down!

When the new Containment device started to smoke, these brave men knew exactly what to do though!

Disaster was avoided! When trouble strikes you know who to call! Contact them at www.ghostbusterschicagodivision.com or find them on facebook. They are ready to believe you!

Of course if Ghostbusting isn’t the help you need there is always Heros For Hire.

Later that Friday Night , my friends and I were fortunate enough to attend Comedy Death Ray, headlining Patton Oswald! With our hilarious host Scott Aukerman warming us up and keeping us warm between guests, the energy never stopped! With Joe Mande starting us off with his jokes about being blocked by celebrities on twitter, and the awkwardness of his “Daddy” on myspace it was great way to start the show. Next was the awkwardly nerdy Dan Telfer who had fans rolling with his bit about watching a Zombie Movie with his pregnant wife. With the energy from the audience ready to peak, out came Patton Oswald, the loud, plump, comic. Most fans know him as the voice of the lead in Pixars Ratatouille or his many reocurring roles on King of Queens, Caprica or the United States of Tara. That night the audience knew him only as the lover of sweatpants and talker of the penis. An altogether great show!

The next day was filled with many more events such a Quiddich lesson for beginers. A D&D campaign right across the enterance to the Main Exibitors Room. Speed Dating, hosted by the Scout Troopers Of Love and The Sith Lord of Romance. That last one sounds like a bad fanfiction waiting to happen, but it was actually alot of fun! For thos looking for love in “Alderaan ” places (their joke not mine) it was great way to meet people in a safe three minute dates.

Later that night I attened the first ever Marvel : Cup o’ Joe panel, hosted by former Editor and Chief Joe Quesada! With Brian Michael Bendis (creator and wirter of Ultimate Spiderman and current writter for Avengers), Matt Fraction (Writer of X-men and the up comming Fear Itself) , C.B. Cebulski (writer of Marvel Fairy Tales and SVP creator) , and Jeph Loeb the Mayor of Television (writer of Hulk Red and the Head of Television) .

What’s this? Suprise guest Mark Waid? And he’ll be writting the new Daredevil series? He quotes to say “maybe every issue doesn’t have to end with me wanting a stiff drink.”. Considering Waid has written on everyone from Archie Andrews to Superman and half the heros inbetween, we will get to see an interesting take on the Man Without Fear later this year. Also if dark vigilanties are up your alley, you should know Frank Castle with be re-launching in a new direction with Punisher and and new writer. As for Moonknight, everyones favorite muliple-peronality-disorder-but-I’m-okay-I-swear hero, he’s moving on up and out in new ways. Out to Los Angles to stop a new Kingpin of crime, and up with the personalities. He will supposedly create these new personas in direct influnce of his time with the Secret Avengers. As for the kingpin, Quesas says it is an already existing villian who will be reveiled at the end of the first arc.

Bendis took a moment to premier his new project with Mark Bagley called “Brilliant”. It is about a group of college students trying to crack the code for superpowers. And the cost that comes with it.

This was a great panel. I have been to alot of group talks like this but nothing quiet like this. With Bendis starting off by throwing random candy in to the audience and all the jokes they make about one another, it seemed more like a comedy show than a comic panel. With a no holds barred Q n’ A at the end that made my sides hust so much from laughter, I almost had to leave. A great group of guys working to make our comics better!

Sunday was they final day for autographs and raiding the Exibitor hall. With both Marvel and DC booths signing at same time as Garth Ennis downstairs, my friends and I divided and conquered. With helpful staff guiding the way I went downstairs to get Ennis’ autograph. Though it felt like I was about to meet the Great and Powerful Oz. No joke, he was in the center of a room all by himself with large black drapes behind him. Only a few fans were allowed in the room at a time, with a girl in a green C2E2 staff shirt waving us in bit by bit. I was very omnious meeting the wizard but I got my one item signed and thanked him for the great books.

Back on the main floor was Kids Day. Free admission for kids with special entertainment for them on the vendor room stage. Why, my big sister even got to meet he favorite Disney Princess Repunzel! A great day.

Of course there were trouble makers.

But Thankfully in addition to C2E2s amazing security staff, we had SHIELD agents on site to defuse larger problems. They even printed out free IDs for aspiring Field Operatives!

And for those real tough cookies, we go right to the top with these two :

Chicago Comic Book and Entertainment Expo finaly pulled off a con that put comics book back where they belong. At the top! Too many conventions get carried away with media guests and gimicks that they lose sight of the main attraction. COMICS! The name is even in your title! Boy did they mean it too! From local comic shops to online distributers. The stuggling indy artist to the top writers in the field. This convention had room for everyone and everything they may want. Great layout, strong panels and a wide range of geekdom, this is what all other conventions should measure up to. With this only being their second year I can’t help but wonder, could they really do any better?

Of any given Christmas, there are certain invariable quantities: there will always be long lines, one will always consume far too much fudge and, at least since 2005, the good Doctor will appear on Christmas day to bring us the gifts of zany adventures and unbridled mirth.

And this year’s outing, aptly titled “A Christmas Carol,” was no exception. I sat down with a mug of sugar cookie eggnog (fortified with a generous volume of spiced rum) hoping for the perfect end to a very saccharine holiday – a final indulgence in something sugary to “exterminate” my sweet tooth.

Trailers for the special had intimated that a parody of the Charles Dickens favorite would be in the offing, and indeed it was – but the details were far more intriguing than we’d been led to believe. The plot revolved around a cantankerous Scrooge of sorts, one Kazran Sardick – masterfully played by Michael Gambon, who has appeared as Dumbledore in the most recent Harry Potter Films. Kazran controls the atmosphere on an unnamed planet in the year 4398, and as misfortune would have it the Doctor’s latest companion Amy Pond and her husband happen to be aboard a space cruiser in that very same atmosphere, caught in a violent storm and plummeting toward the surface below. Amy summons the Doctor for a hasty rescue, and the ever-resourceful Time Lord quickly realizes that a simple adjustment to the atmospheric controls under Kazran’s command will save the cruiser and all 4,003 people aboard. The old man is of course unmoved, and the Doctor surmises that his hardened heart will not be convinced by any appeals to compassion. He decides that he must go back in time and visit the young Kazran to discover the source of his bitter cynicism, and prevent him from becoming the cold-hearted old man he is in the present day (the ghost of Christmas past – see?).

He arrives posing as Kazran’s babysitter, and learns that the child’s dark psyche is rooted in his isolation from the world, and the tyrannical abuse of the elder Mr. Sardick. So, the Doctor introduces the lad to adventure and excitement – beginning with a close encounter with a shark from the upper atmosphere (it’s a curious quality of this planet that fish are able to “swim” in the air on weak electrical charges). Kazran also shows the Doctor a cryonic warehouse where his father stores people in suspended animation as “collateral” on loans, and they defrost a young lady named Abigail (Welsh soprano Katherine Jenkins making her television debut). The three spend an adventurous evening together, and as the night draws to a close they agree to meet again every Christmas eve for further forays into time and space – with Abigail returning to deep freeze in the interim.

The revamped Doctor Who (as opposed to its “classic” incarnation) has always appealed to me, at least, for its tendency to revel in surreal, almost nonsensical fun. The above plot synopsis should bear witness to the fact that present-day Doctor Who is immensely imaginative and, at times, even surreal. I was reminded at times during “A Christmas Carol” of Douglas Adams and his approach to science fiction, where realism takes a backseat to satire and cultural commentary. Fish swimming gracefully through the air surely isn’t great science, but it’s hard to deny the visual appeal of seeing the Doc, Abigail, and Kazran riding a shark-driven sleigh though the clouds. And though that penchant for pantomime has led to excess (mostly under former show-runner Russell T. Davies), a heaping helping of whimsy has always been welcome and entirely appropriate on Christmas. Complaining that “A Christmas Carol” is too lighthearted for science-fiction is like complaining that your candy cane is too sweet. What else would you want for the holidays?

Wisely, then, writer Steven Moffat puts an engaging plot in place but really gives his talents to the humor and character development. Matt Smith’s interpretation of the Doctor is perfect for intellectual humor and clever turns of phrase, and Moffat gives him a stuffed stocking of them. A “Christmas Carol” succeeds largely on Smith’s excellent performance; he has clearly made this part his own and put a unique finish on a character that is now nearly 50 years old. He is at once warm and affable, but tragically lonely – one of the best lines in the episode is when Kazran as a young adult, whose relationship with Abigail is blossoming into romance, asks the Doctor if he should kiss her. “It’s either that or go to your room and design a new screwdriver. Don’t make my mistakes,” the Doctor replies. And speaking of romance, I was quite impressed by the development of the touching bond between Kazran and Abigail – a tragic thread, to be sure, but one that culminates with a beautiful lesson on the timelessness that can be found in even one single day in love. Katherine Jenkins uses her full vocal talents to bring the message home in a stunning aria that finally melts Kazran’s heart, calms the skies, and saves the day. You may scoff at the treacle, but it was enough to make this old Time Lord a bit misty over missing the Amy Pond is his life, too.

When it comes to Christmas, you’re either a Tiny Time or a Scrooge. On any other day of the year, it’s perfectly acceptable to wallow in the dreary ruminations of “Battlestar Galactica” or a flick like Pandorum. But when the sleigh bells are jingling and every tree is bedecked with lights, the entertainment ought to match the merriment. From “It’s A Wonderful Life” to “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” we expect our Christmas television to be like a cozy fire on a cold winter’s night. And this year’s Doctor Who special warmed in just the right way.

It’s the holiday time of year again, and if nineteenth century poems are to be believed, many of us are beset in our slumber by chimeras of pruned dragées (or visions of sugar plums, if you prefer). Some of us dream of a white Christmas or a happy Hanukkah, others strive for balance in the Force, and perhaps a few idealistic souls harbor hopes for world peace.

And some of us simply long for a really bad ass Goblin priest.

Yes, just in time for the season of peace, Blizzard Entertainment is dropping the latest expansion of its widely successful World of Warcraft MMORPG (www.worldofwarcraft.com), and for devoted fanatics like myself, the aptly titled Cataclysm is the reason for the season.

This expansion has been a long time in coming. Blizzard has a penchant for tinkering extensively with WoW’s mechanics and content, and since the release of the previous expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, the game has changed extensively. A recent patch streamlining character talents (a customizable set of skills and spells for each class) greatly simplified game play, and modifications earlier this year made searching for dungeon groups much faster. But to feed the “hordes” of avid players, an MMORPG needs fresh content – new levels, new dungeons and raids, and new forms of “schwag”: the in-game mounts, pets, titles, and achievements that add flare one’s character and afford bragging rights to your friends. While Wrath has been an exciting expansion for the game, there’s a general feeling that Blizzard rolled out the content a tad hastily. Several maximum-level raids (the revamped Naxxramas, followed by Ulduar, Trial of the Crusader, and finally Icecrown Citadel) were released without adequate time for players to complete them. A tenor of expansion fatigue certainly prevails on my realm.

Thus, the hype for Cataclysm is substantial and expectations are high. The game is not just getting new content but for the first time since 2005 the vast realms of Azeroth are getting a makeover. “The Shattering” event, which occurred prior to the official release of the expansion proper, refashioned the landscapes of the world – entire zones have been destroyed or plunged into the sea, great gorges score the deserts, and cities razed to the ground have been rebuilt and improved. It’s an exciting new thread in the rich lore of the Warcraft world, and an opportunity for a now 6-year-old game to receive needed updates to the game environment. More options are being offered to players, too: race/class combinations that were previously forbidden, a new level 85 cap, and two new playable races to boot – for the Horde, the goblins (who were previously a neutral NPC race) and for the Allies, the lupine worgen.

World of Warcraft is an unquestionable success – its membership now numbers in excess of 12 million. But will Cataclysm live up to the hype, and push the game’s fortunes to even loftier heights? This veteran player certainly hopes so. Tune in next week for my full review of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

If you haven’t been watching The Big Bang Theory (CBS, Thursdays at 8/7 Central), I have but one question for you: How can you call yourself a nerd? This show was made for us. Call it the ultimate geek buffet: a pile of physics, a heaping portion of sci-fi and fantasy references, a cadre of hapless social misfits and one unattainably good-looking female (yes, I realize this most likely also describes the last D&D night you had with your friends, assuming the female to be a non-player character).

If you’re a nerd whose credentials are now suspect, allow me to catch you up. The series follows four professional scientists and their less-than-stellar essays in social and romantic competence. Experimental physicist Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and theoretical physicist Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) form the backbone of the cast, and exemplify the two most notorious species of geekery. Cooper is the unassailable genius with a towering ego; unlike his companions he has a complete disinterest in social graces or the opposite sex – he deems social conventions to be onerous and physical contact to be, well, gross. His obsession with nugatory rituals (he must knock three times on any door, and becomes apoplectic if “his” spot on the couch is usurped) and apparent ignorance of even rudimentary human norms approaches certifiable mental illness. Leonard, on the other hand, is the more sympathetic variety of nerd: bespectacled, lactose-intolerant, insecure. He’s brilliant but humble and suffers bouts of loneliness and self-doubt as many of we geeks do. His success with women is hindered by his shyness, his diminutive size, and the fact that he’s a thirtysomething male in an action figure-stocked apartment. Leonard has an on-and-off relationship with the female lead, Penny (of no last name, to date), a waitress and aspiring actress who lives across the hall from the apartment he shares with Sheldon. Though “out of your league” beautiful, Penny’s not sure she’s smart enough for Leonard, and Leonard (in true geek fashion) moved too quickly toward the “L” word while they were together. For the moment, they’re just friends – but the door to a reunion is very much ajar.

Adding much mirth to the proceedings are aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz, who fancies himself a modern Dirk Diggler but who’s really more of a Pepe Le Pew, and particle astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali, so timid around women that he’s rendered mute without the aid of alcohol. The comedic meat of the show is in the interactions between these four friends as they engage in many of the geeky pursuits we all adore – Klingon Boggle, World of Warcraft, comic book collecting, and wondering if it’s possible to supplement one’s income through masturbation. (Surely we’ve all wondered that before?)

The appeal of the series is its realism; the jokes prove again and again that the writers have done their homework in both science and science-fiction. The humor turns on a dime from a reference to Bose-Einstein condensates to a joke derived from the 1981 film Scanners. Kudos are rightly deserved by the actors as well for developing their characters appropriately over time and avoiding the usual stock nerd acting techniques. Hollywood seems to have difficulty portraying geeks without resorting to cringe-inducing cliches (think Steve Urkel, Screech, or The Simpsons‘ “Comic Book Guy”). BBT gives us a refreshing view of nerdery without the stereotypes, geeks who are just as quirky and tragic as we are. These are the guys we want to hang out with on Doctor Who night.

It’s not often that any film or t.v. series can be categorically endorsed for all tastes, but I’m going to be daring and advance the following hypothesis: If you’re a nerd and proud of it, you’ll love this show. So watch it, or I will use my telepathy to make your head explode.

Why, listening to geek talk when you’re not online (or when you are, who are we to judge).

That’s right 8 Days A Geek will be producing our own bi-weekly podcast starting with our first episode on June 16th. We will be posting each episode in the blog itself so that you can go to the same site for your geek stories and geek podcasts. As soon as we begin posting episodes we will start adding them to the most common podcast directories (ie. iTunes and Zune Marketplace). If enough of our readers become listeners we are prepared to start a live stream of the podcast so you can listen uncut and chat with us in the process.

Keep reading and hopefully start listening.
