8 Easy and Geeky Pumpkin Carving Ideas Volume III

Halloween is less than one week away.  Which means it is time, once again, for me to scour the internet for ways to proudly display our love of all things geek on our front porches this Friday night.  Feel free to check out the past two years’ lists here and here.  As I have said in the past, there are a lot of amazing pumpkin carving ideas out there.  Some are so detailed, they are almost works of art.  If you have the time and skill to create one of those…you probably don’t need any ideas from us here at 8daysageek.  Thusly, I try to choose designs I’ve found on the internet that I know we are all capable of replicating.  Just about any image can be carved on a pumpkin.  It’s all about tracing the image and picking the right shaped squash for the image you’d like to create.  With all of that said…let’s starts the countdown for this year.

apple pumpkin

#8.  Apple Logo- Apple sucks.  All of their products suck.  iTunes is the devil’s creation sent to earth solely to torture mankind for their sin of loving inferior products.  However, apparently there are quite a few people out there who still like this company’s garbage.  If you do…then celebrate your love of overpriced, awful phones and tablets by carving this super simple logo on this year’s pumpkin.

pokeball pumpkin

#7.  Pokeball- Gotta catch ‘em all!  Celebrate one of the most popular cartoons of your youth by slapping this image on your pumpkin this year.  This is another incredibly simple design.  Just make sure when scraping away the pumpkin in the different sections that you keep the same thickness throughout.  You don’t want patches of light and dark to shine through.

Portal pumpkin

#6.  Portal- How about a video game?  I saw this pumpkin on the internet and thought it was a great geek way to celebrate Halloween.  It seems fairly straight-forward and simple to create.  Even GLaDOS would be happy to see this image lit up on your porch this weekend.  I think it would be a blast to watch for people to approach your house and if they recognize the image, hand them a piece of cake.  If you don’t understand that reference…go buy the video game.

firefly pumpkin

#5.  Firefly- Browncoats unite!  I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a logo that looks more appropriate carved on a jack-o-lantern.  This image may be a bit tricky; as you need the lettering to look just right, or let’s face it…you’re just writing a word on a pumpkin.  As with many of the images I choose for these lists each year, I don’t know how many of the little trick-or-treaters are going to recognize the logo of a television show that was cancelled before they were born.  But their parents might.

SHIELD pumpkin

#4.  S.H.I.E.L.D- I’m sure you will have a ton of little superheroes dropping by for candy Friday night.  Light this logo up on your front porch and any little supervillains who come by will know to behave themselves.  Or…they could vandalize your house for representing the authority their characters battle on a regular basis.  I think a fun addition to this would be an un-carved pumpkin sitting right next to it wearing just an eye patch.

space invaders pumpkin

#3.  Space Invaders- Let’s represent the O.G. of video games.  Celebrate your love of gaming by carving this iconic image from the game that basically created the global industry of gaming we have today.  It doesn’t appear to be too difficult to create.  Although, there are some pretty tight corners.  Make sure you are being precise or this one could turn out badly.

minion pumpkin

#2.  Minion- I know most of the little kiddos out on Halloween won’t even recognize many of the images I use on these countdowns every year.  So, let’s toss this one in the mix.  Every little ghost and goblin that comes by will know this character.  Plus, even as an adult…I think these little guys are funny.  We’re not actually carving through the pumpkin for this image at all.  So be careful.  Make sure you are scraping to an even depth and not breaking through the skin of the pumpkin completely.  If you plan on lighting this with a regular old candle, plan on cutting an air hole in the back, or the flame is going to get snuffed out as soon as you put the top on.

Iron Man pumpkin

#1.  Iron Man- What better way to end a list of geeky pumpkin carving ideas than with a comic book character?  Comic books are the quintessential geek companion.  Tony Stark may be a millionaire playboy…but he’s also one of the smartest men on Earth and a true geek.  How many of you have designed your own superhero suit as children…or even as adults when it’s a slow day at work?  Celebrate Halloween and Marvel’s blockbuster creation with this image on your porch this year.  I believe some of the coolest images on pumpkins are the ones that are just scraped into the skin and not carved all the way through.  I have created images like these in the past with only tools found in my house, so don’t think it is something that a novice cannot do.  Just be careful and have fun!
