8 Best Vampire Movie

I have a list here of the 8 best vampire movies. It was a tough list to compile. The 20-sided-die rolls steered me toward a path I can’t say I agree with but you have to have faith in the 20-sided-die. Because if you can’t have faith in the die-rolls then what on this earth can you have faith in. There are some good vampire films out there beyond what is on the list but I had to take into account that some deserve a spot because they were different than what had been done before and still good. I had to remove some great movies because they were great but too different (Nicholas Cage in Vampire’s Kiss) or too campy. A campy horror film is great, but does it deserve a spot on the list of “the greatest”? Not according to the complex system of mathmatics and die-rolls used to create these lists. So here you go.

blade_118. Blade (1998). Probably Wesley Snipes third best movie after Demolition Man and New Jack City. Blade is comic based which gives it some nerd cred, and it’s a fun action film. I think it contributed to a million tribal arm bands in the late 90’s. It is also just a real fun movie. Not scary of course, but it was pretty cool at the time and it’s a different approach to a Vampire story with an original character.

Buffy_the_Vampire_Slayer_77. Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1992). Starring Kristy Swanson and Beverly Hills 90210‘s Luke Perry, this movie is a poke at the horror genre and classic movie altogether. Paul Ruben and Rutger Hauer play the immortal villains raising a vampire army that can only be stopped by the chosen one. The chosen one is the head cheerleader at a highschool who’s biggest concerns are prom and keeping up a “keen fashion sense”. It’s brilliant, and inspired the popular TV series of the same name (which really launched Joss Whedon’s career).

from-dusk-till-dawn6. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996). The Gecko brothers made Vampire hunting cool. Like bad ass cool. Set in a mexican bar that’s open from dusk until dawn these outlaws find themselves paired up with an unlikely cadre, of barflies and a preacher with his family, fending for their lives against an onslaught of the undead. Directed by Robert Bodriguez and written by Quinten Tarrintino this movie is one crazy ride filled with ferocity and gore every step of the way. I haven’t checked out the series yet but I hear good things.

Bram-Stoker-s-Dracula-bram-stokers-dracula-10765483-1024-5765. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992). Adapted from the horror novel by Bram Stoker and starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, and Keanu Reeves this movie is classic. Of course there is a classic Bram Stoker’s Dracula but this movie is better and 20-years-old now, so it’s a classic but not “the classic”. The imagery and atmosphere in this movie hold up today. Directed by Francis Ford Coppala it was a critical success at the time of it’s release. Gary Oldman is brilliant in everything he does and he is nothing less in this film. A must watch this Halloween season.

30-days-of-night4. 30 Days of Night (2007). We may have really started touching on the horror with Bram Stoker but 30 Days of Night is horror to the max. I have affinity for this movie for my own reasons but it’s still really good. I don’t know if I care for the final 2 minutes, but Ben Foster is amazing and the movie has a great idea behind it. Based off of a graphic novel, the concept is genius. Vampires invade an uber north town that lives beyond sunset for 30 days of the year. Brilliant!

Interview_with_a_Vampire_13. Interview With the Vampire (1994). Obviously a great movie. It stars Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt and tells the story of how Brad Pitt’s character became an immortal and the life he lived up to the present. Adapted from a novel of the same name, it is a classic vampire story told with amazing detail and haunting atmosphere. The books are great as well and I recommend you check out any part of this you can if you haven’t already.

TheLostBoyslarge2. The Lost Boys (1987). Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patrick, Corey Haim and Corey Feldman! That’s a cast that can’t lose. Throw in some Edward Herman for giggles and you have the second best vampire movie ever made. I have no doubt in my mind this caused a vamp resurgence and is responsible for a million goths today. It made teenage vampire life seem so desirable. Michael and Sam are new to Santa Carlo, the supposed murder capitol of the world. That’s the one thing that “sucks” about the town, “… all the damn vampires”. Amazing.

thCA9H85ZW1. Fright Night (1985). There was a reboot of this classic in 2011. Though they tried to hook me with Pavel Chekov and the tenth Doctor, David Tennent, something was just not right. I remember being kind of creeped out and scared by this movie. Evil Ed, though a loser, is scary as s*** once he becomes the sweaty unstable monster who serves Charlies neighbor. It may not be serious every second of it’s 106 min. run time (Charlie wards off Jerry “the Vampire” with a pencil through his hands because it’s made of wood. The  vampires name is JERRY… c’mon) but the parts that are horror are spot on. And a good time was had by all…

There you have it. I know it’s missing Salem’s Lot and John Carpenter’s Vampires and a dozen other worthwhile flicks, but there is only room for 8. Feel free to disagree @werewolforigin or in the comments section below.
