Dallas Sci Fi Expo – Day 1

sfx Today and Tomorrow Comic and Sci-Fi fans get a treat at the Dallas Sci Fi Expo. It’s a convention similar to other comic and sci fi conventions in Irving Texas at the Irving Convention Center, featuring top artists from the comicing world, featured celebrity guests from shows such as Warehouse 13 and Doctor Who. Vendors line the first floor haggling their wares and the cosplay is in full swing. It’s a great place to spend tons of your hard earned dollars on collectible figures, POP figurines, and snatching those rare autographs from a few of your favorites from the nerding world. If you have the time I do recommend checking it out.

IMG561Some of my favorite costumes were the X-Force Domino to my left here (the X-Force Wolverine wasn’t around when I took this shot), the Kevin Smith, and Barf (from Spaceballs). There were a hundred and six Karen Gillans. which I’m sure had little to do with the fact that Karen Gillan was there. She did a panel with Sylvester McCoy (the 7th Doctor, Radigast from The Hobbit) and they signed autographs at 4. The Amy Ponds may have been out in flocks or droves or gaggles or whatever it is you call a plethora of Amy Ponds, but to be fair there were definitely some good Ponds.

Sci Fi ExpoThe convention is okay but I have to admit of a few problems I’ve had with it. This isn’t my first con by far but this is my 2nd at this venue and I don’t care for the wrist bands. It feels cheap. I have a media pass and I don’t get a nifty lanyard with a badge, I get a cheap carnival bracelet that says media that I have to wear for two days if I want to go back the 2nd day. You obviously packed the house Irving Convention Center don’t be cheap! This goes for weekend pass goers, child tickets, or single day passes. You can buy a memorable lanyard if you are so inclined.

Beyond that I do want to mention that this is a 2 day expo only, no Friday events. Typically Saturday is your packed house and I have to say it really packed the house today. It seemed overly crowded. If the expo draws that big a crowd it might be time to seek out a larger venue or expand to 3 days. It was overwhelming with the amount of people there. In some ways it makes me think of the “yogism”, That’s why nobody comes here, there are too many people. I wanted to flood my PC with cosplay (there were more good costumes than I had the availability to capture), but there was barely the elbow room to shoot. They have this great “red carpet” for cosplayers to strut and pose for photos and unless you stake out a spot, good luck.

IMG555It was still a good con. If I could chase off some of my nerd brethren to create the breathing you need to really experience the geek realm then I might have (not really nerd brethren, I’m just saying that for the un-initiated, you know I love you). Tomorrow will be less packed and Karen Gillan and a few others won’t be in attendance because as with every con there are a few bigger celebs who are Saturday only. I’m hoping a few of the players I couldn’t capture like so many pokemon will make a return tomorrow.  I will pack them in my pokeballs forever and ever.

If you are in the area look for me. I’ll be in the yellow Dalek T with two little geeks trying to get me to carry them (they’ll never grow up to be elven warriors), and the purple two day old media bracelet that smells like I slept in it. I might try and catch the Warehouse 13 panel. I don’t watch Warehouse 13 but I did watch Eureka, I wrote our review for its finale check it out, and Drake and Josh. Don’t Judge me. If you have good cosplay I want to see it. I missed the contest too. Too packed (but last year I was asked to be in the Dallas Comic Con contest with my scarecrow costume. I turned it down because I’m shy and the group that asked me won 2nd place which oddly feels like a win for me :). In final thoughts I just want to say Dallas Sci Fi Expo, like books, check ’em out.
