Comic Review: A1 anthology #2

A1 is an anthology that was co-created by Dave Elliot back in 1989. Dave Elliot has now teamed with Titan Comics to bring back A1.

A1 #1 hit shelves last month and A1 #2 comes out on July 10. The anthology consists of three stories.

The Weirding Willows #2 coverOne of the stories in the A1 anthology is Weirding Willows. Weirding Willows combines multiple fantasy worlds including: Oz; Wonderland; The Jungle Book; and Peter Rabbit. The Weirding Willows is written by Dave Elliot with art by Barnaby Bagenda. I love the art in this book. I especially love the way Baloo, Bagheera, and the Cheshire Cat were re-envisioned. This story is fun, imaginative, and intriguing. I can’t wait to see where it goes.

Carpe Diem cover (416x640)CarpeDiem is about the World’s Seven Greatest Assassins. Each is named for a day of the week and then there is Sir 8th Day who has an 8 ball for a head. CarpeDiem is written by W.H. Rauf with art by Rhoald Marcellius. In this issue, the assassins find themselves facing a gang of clowns. It sounds silly. And it is. But, it is fun. While, this story provides no intrigue, it is colorful, and I found myself laughing out loud a couple times. Odyssey cover (416x640)The last story in the anthology is Odyssey. Odyssey is about an immortal soldier who fought with the Americans during WWII. He’s called Blazing Glory and bears a striking resemblance to another American supersoldier. Although, Blazing Glory doesn’t carry a shield. He carries guns. This story begins in 1945, following “Blaze” through some of his adventures in WWII, then jumps to the year 2003. Odyssey is written by Dave Elliot and the art is by Garrie Gastonny. Blaze behaves the way we all imagine we would behave if we were supersoldiers during WWII, which makes it very fun to read. And this issue has a very ominous opening, which makes me think this story is going to get much more complicated.

There’s no question that you should pick up this book while visiting your local comic shop tomorrow. The only decision you need to make is which cover you want.
