Geek Book Review: Modesty Blaise: The Girl in the Iron Mask

Modesty BlaiseModesty Blaise is a British comic strip created in the 1960s by Peter O’Donnell and Jim Holdaway. Modesty Blaise The Girl in the Iron Mask is a collection of 3 stories from the comic strip: “Fiona”, “Walkabout”, and “The Girl in the Iron Mask.” It is written by Peter O’Donnell and all the artwork in the book is by Enric Badia Romero.

I have to admit, I wasn’t too excited to read this book. I remember hating all those adult comic strips in the Sunday paper, feeling like all they did was take away space from the good stuff like Garfield and Peanuts. And the first story in the book, “Fiona,” starts out a little slow and silly. Fiona is the name of a chimp who is in love with Modesty’s sidekick, Willie Garvin (pictured below). However, once the action starts, this book is awesome. It reminds me a lot of the old Kung-Fu movies, where you’re not sure how the hero can always take out a group of six skilled assassins without a scratch, but he always can. Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin can take down anyone, anytime, anywhere. In the story, “Girl in the Iron Mask,” Modesty manages to climb roughly a hundred and fifty feet to escape the hole she’s being held in, then take down her three large captors all while wearing an iron mask.

As a woman, I always delight in tough female characters and Modesty Blaise is probably the toughest. Bad guys run away at the mere mention of her name. I would definitely recommend Girl in the Iron Mask and I look forward to reading more Modesty Blaise titles in the future. Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin
