TWIG: Day(s) of Digital Downloads

XBLA/PSN games are invading next week, folks. Not that it is a bad thing, but I am known for frequently expressing my disdain of non-physical videogames. It’s almost like a security thing for me, but I do have my fair share of digital games so I’m not completely opposed to it; however, I am completely opposed to digital downloads becoming the only source of my games. For now. We’ll see what the future brings.

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles

July 17, 2012

PSN

This already-released-for-Wii rail shooter for the Wii is run through the HD machine and assigned some trophies. Move compatible, or use your regular controller. I like the RE series but dang, their rail shooters are horrible.

IGN:Arm yourself against the horrors of the city in this sequel to the gun shooting game Umbrella Chronicles. Darkside Chronicles takes place in Resident Evil 2’s Racoon City. It’s September 29, 1998, and the city has turned to hell due to the effects of the T-virus. Players take control of Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy to deal with the undead. Only this time, the enemy is not the Umbrella Corporation … instead, players venture into the unexplored areas of the Resident Evil story, along with the darker passages of the characters’ histories.Release Date: July 17, 2012MSRP: 19.99 USDM for Mature: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, LanguageGenre: Shooter

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD

July 18, 2012

XBLA

The only skateboarding game I played is the first Tony Hawk game for the PS2. I was horrible at it, because I couldn’t link tricks, and I was very bad at judging when to let go of tricks. My poor digital representation of a pro skater had so many concussions and broken necks that by the time I was done with a two or three minute round, he would have been a pile of bone dust on a skateboard.  I’m saying this to illustrate a point: current skateboarding games, much like other sports games, are so far out of my radar that they barely register. This particular release is supposed to harken back to the days of a trick after trick after trick to get all the points, so perhaps this one is worth a look.

IGN:
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD takes the best elements of the classic THPS games and gives them a fresh update to create an all new skateboarding experience. Tapping into fans’ muscle memories, the gameplay in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD returns to controllers and focuses on the satisfaction of linking sick tricks for maximum points. Combining sharp visuals with the best controls ever in a Tony Hawk game, the feel is cutting edge yet timeless.Beyond just bringing back classic skating memories, THPS HD gives skate fans something new with innovative game modes and online features. Hawkman mode makes its return, as players fly around levels collecting colored pellets before time runs out. Big Head Survival sticks players with a head that’s constantly growing unless you perform tricks before it gets too big. And new PROjectives provide unique, harder objectives unlocked upon completing the game’s originals. Online, get into modes such as Trick Attack (two minute scoring battles,) Graffiti mode (tag as many objects as possible by performing huge tricks on them,) Big Head Elimination (keep pulling tricks or your head will be first to pop,) and Free Skate (just tool around the stages for fun with friends.)Release Date: July 18, 2012MSRP: 15 USDT for TeenGenre: Extreme Sports

Dyad

July 17, 2012

PSN

This sounds really interesting, and looks like it too. Preview is above. I’m all for abstract games hitting the gaming world, there are far too few of them.

From IGN:Dyad is an abstract racing/shooter/puzzle hybrid where players move forward by manipulating other vessels on the track.Dyad also explores the mind state of the player — the game is designed to create a strong sense of flow, upon which it offers different contemplative approaches. The topics of contemplation, called Mantras, create a thought-based metagame on top of the audio-visual gameplay. An independently-developed project created by Shawn McGrath, Dyad is made for play on PlayStation 3 consoles. It has also been demonstrated at festivals using “The Machine”, a device built for full immersion into the Dyad experience.Release Date: July 17, 2012RP for Rating Pending:

Anna

July 16, 2012

PC

Horror PC games need love too. I have a special place in my gaming heart for them, the only PC games I bought when I was younger were cheap horror games from the PC rack at whatever store I was at. $10 horror games are where it’s at. Plus, it’s Italian!

Anna is a first person horror adventure with 3D graphics. The game is set in an old sawmill based between Champoluc and Periasc, a place actually existing in the Val D’Ayas in Valle d’Aosta, Italy. Here the main character will have to solve puzzles and ‘face’ the presences who inhabit the buildings. Depending on the mental health of the character, the locations will change and reveal different secrets, which will lead to one of the three possible endings.Release Date: July 16, 2012MSRP: 9.9 USDGenre: AdventurePublisher: Dreampainters

I can give the face melting 3DS some love too since I will probably invest in a 3DS XL. Yup. You read that all right, I, Rachel the hater of all 3D gaming, will buy an extra large face melting 3DS.

Oh, and the game… It’s a dungeon crawler with co-op possibilities, and these are generally really fun when you find a group to round out your characters and skills with.

From IGNHeroes of Ruin, a brand new adventure featuring four unlikely heroes brought together to form a fearsome alliance.Heroes of Ruin uses StreetPass to create an inventive in-game Traders Network where players can buy and sell rare and powerful items picked up in battle.
