In honor of it being one day away from All-Star week in Major League Baseball, I decided to talk about something that many baseball fans hold close to their hearts: The Home Run Derby.

Who doesn’t love watching the game’s preeminent sluggers absolutely smash the ball on every swing? The home run is one of the most exciting plays in any sport, much less baseball. As a kid, I loved watching guys like Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, Ken Griffey Jr., and Barry Bonds just rip the cover off of the ball. Of course, now we know that many of those mashers were juicing it up, but that doesn’t take away from the excitement I got when McGwire hit 20 home runs in one single Home Run derby plate appearance.

Now we have clean baseball players still dropping bombs. There’s Josh Hamilton, Jose Bautista, and Albert Pujols, just to name a few. Needless to say, the Home Run Derby is pure fun. So when I came across the game I’m reviewing for this week, I was very, very excited. I’ve been playing this game for about two weeks now, and I have not been disappointed.

The game is called Home Run Battle 3D, and it comes to us via the same company that created the other baseball game I reviewed, 9 Innings Pro Baseball. As with the first game I reviewed, this game is also well polished. The graphics are amazing and the game play is extremely enjoyable.

This game is addictive! There are a couple of options you can choose when playing, match up mode or arcade. Match up mode allows you to play online against an opponent. Arcade is simply you trying to smash the ball into oblivion. The concept of the game is pretty straightforward, hit as many home runs as possible before you get ten outs. The game just doesn’t serve up fast balls, however. The pitcher will throw an array of different pitches your way, so expect curve balls, sliders, and the occasional heater.

The game works with your phone’s gyroscope, so if you want to go opposite field with an outside pitch, you would tilt your phone to the right while hitting the ball. The game offers some different balls that you can hit to get more points, like the gold ball and the angel wing ball, which takes an out away from you so you can play longer. You can hit monster shots that hit the scoreboard, hit the foul poles, call your shot, or even hit for the home run cycle (Left field, Center, and Right) for extra points.

The ads are minimally invasive, and do not affect the game play in any way. All this is available with the free version. The paid version ($0.99) gets you an ad free game with the ability to upgrade your slugger with different gear. You get a lot of game for free, so if you are the casual gamer, the free version should suffice. The only beef I have with this game, thus the rating losing half a point, is it drains a lot of battery life. This can be expected, as the Android OS has never been too battery friendly in the first place. Even though it is expected, it still isn’t cool.

Overall, the game play is highly addictive and fun, the game looks great, and it is fairly simple to learn how to play. At the price of free, you can’t get more bang for your buck in the Google Play store.

About Steven Brewer

I’m a lifelong comic book fan. Comics pulled me in at an early age, with influences ranging from Chris Claremont’s historic X-Men run, Walt Simonson’s Thor run, Mike Zeck’s run on The Punisher limited series, Jim Lee’s X-Men, the early 90’s X-Men animated series, and the best cartoon ever made, Batman: The Animated Series. As a kid, these comics and cartoons gave me a new world to go to when the real world wasn’t so nice. Because of this, comic books will always have a special place in my heart. I love everything about comics, and still get the same feeling reading them today as I did when I was a kid. My major in college was psychology, so I love to incorporate that into comics.
