Geek Book Review: The True Adventures of the World’s Greatest Stuntman

Have you ever heard of Vic Armstrong? Neither had I until I was sent a copy of his book (title). You see, Vic has been in the stunt business for quite a long time and as such you’ve seen him a hell of a lot more than you think you have. Here is a link to a list of the movies that Vic has been in followed by a synopsis of the book.

Think you don’t know Vic Armstrong?

Wrong! You’ve seen his work in countless films…

He’s been a stunt double for James Bond, Indiana Jones and Superman, and he’s directed action scenes for three Bond movies, Mission Impossible 3Thor, and the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man to name but a few.

Counting Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg and Arnold Schwarzenegger among his friends, and officially credited in the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Most Prolific Stuntman, Vic’s got a lot of amazing stories to tell, and they’re all here in this – the movie memoir of the year!

So as you can see Vic Armstrong has been through a lot in his life and has worked in some of the biggest films (some of them geek films) of our generation. Getting his start as a stuntman who didn’t make enough to quit his day job and becoming big enough to be the stunt coordinator on the movie The Avengers, Vic has never let too big of a problem stand in his way. This book follows Vic’s life as told by him and it contains an amazing hollywood tail of a lifetime of crazy stunts and even crazier luck.

The book itself starts out a little slow, as does any other origin story, but picks up as soon as Vic starts telling you about his film career. Vic Armstrong is responsible for a lot of the tools and tricks that stuntmen use today. As he is telling you how he solved a problem you get excited to see if his solution worked because unlike most autobiographies Vic Armstrong doesn’t hide when he failed or when a stunt went wrong.

Reading this book has given me a greater understanding of what kind of work, brains, and balls go into making all of the movies we watch believable. If you are interested in the film industry or you want to know what it’s like to be a stuntman, you need to pickup Vic Armstrong’s autobiography, The True Adventures of the World’s Greatest Stuntman.
