It happened again! E3 week has taken place, the time when major developers, such as Gameloft, EA/Chillingo, and Square Enix, have taken the time to showcase what the future of mobile gaming has to offer. Consequentially, however, this past Thursday of iOS releases left only slim pickings for this week’s 8DAG Apple App-Aholics spotlight. Nonetheless, there was at least one title worth mentioning:

In Project83113, you are Belle, a four-armed creature that has evolved to “bring an end to the reign of the machine.” From first glance, Project83113 looks like a typical side-scrolling RPG, but there’s more to it than that. With the absence of the common digitized buttons, which would control your character, Project83113 functions more like a typical endless runner, similar to Mirror’s Edge or Don’t Run With a Plasma Sword. Making complete use of the touchscreen via swipes and taps for movement, the lack of a virtual stick seems a bit unconventional (and difficult to grow accustomed to) for a game of the RPG genre.

Pros: With so many challenges happening in each level, you can be thankful there are an adequate amount of checkpoints in the approximate places you’d hope they’d be. It’s nice to know the developer knows how difficult their game is! 😉

Cons: For starters, the name, Project83113, sounds a bit off-kilter due to its vague collaboration of letters and numbers. Unfortunately, this makes the exact title difficult to remember, therefore encouraging it to be forgotten in the shuffle of apps. Also, the control swipes can sometimes be difficult to remember, keep straight, and execute properly, causing multiple unnecessary deaths.

Fair Warning: The game is less entertaining if you don’t keep the pace up. While this kamikaze technique may take a bit of time to master, it is the ultimate way to regain lost life-points. Be warned: this will test your hand-eye coordination, reflexes, and ability to make fast decisions.

Bottom Line: Has potential and may even improve with some future updates. As for now, however, Project83113 is scarcely worth the $0.99 NCsoft is asking. But don’t take my word for it. Judge for yourself, if you dare! 😀

Happy Downloading!
