Super Awesome Geeky Weekend

I went missing folks.  Real world stuff took me temporarily away from this column that I love.  Thanks a lot, Taxes!  Well now that April 15th is somewhat behind us I want you lil geeks of all sizes to know I’m back and my brain is erupting with information about the geek world I desperately want to share with you.

I’m going to start with a simple column about next weekend.  Occasionally the stars align and we are given a “Crazy Awesome Geek Weekend.”  The stars have aligned!  Friday May 4th brings us the release of the long awaited Avengers Movie and Saturday May 5th is Free Comic Book Day!  If that’s not exciting to you, I guarantee it’s exciting to someone you know, maybe your kid.

Friday May 4th brings a movie to the screens that I personally have been waiting for for 30 years.  As soon as I was introduced to comics, I imagined what this movie would look like.  The Avengers is a culmination.  It’s a Geek-splosion.  There has been as actual cinematic build up of decent movies leading to this.  We have seen two Iron Man Movies, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America and with the controversial exception of the hulk, these movies were good.  They can all be pulled apart and properly critiqued, but overall they did what they were supposed to do.  They prepared us for The Earths Mightiest heroes.  I’m excited and you should be too.

Saturday May 5th is free comic book day.  What is Free Comic Book Day you ask?  It’s exactly what it sounds like, a day when comic book stores and publishers team up to bring you and your little readers free books.  This wildly cool event was started over a decade ago and has grown into a comic book festival of sorts.  Bring your child to your local store and look through the free books, maybe even buy something to say thanks to the store owner.    How cool is an industry that get’s together once a year to give you free stuff?

What’s in it for you?  Your burdening young  brainiac has been reading his or her comic books for a couple of months or years now and has constantly wondered, what these costumed heroes would look like in real life.  Well thanks to Marvel studios we finally get that answer, they look like Scarlett Johansson and Christopher Evans.  Superheroes are not hard on the eyes.  And on Saturday when your geek wakes up still geeking out from the Avengers, pack them in the car, head to your local comic shop and come home with an armful of free comic books thanks to Free Comic Book Day.  Since you saved so much money, with the free comic books, maybe you can rent  the Toby Maguire Spider-Man Movies and prepare yourself and your sidekick for the next big summer blockbuster geek release, The Amazing Spider-Man.

Enjoy Geeky weekend folks, I know I will.

Thanks for reading and remember sidekicks rule.
