The new iPad: a hands on

So, I finally did it. I’ve said several times that I couldn’t really see the use for a tablet in my “kit”. I am here to tell you that I was wrong and I’m sorry. I am the proud new owner of a new iPad and here is my story.

The first thing I’m going to talk about is actually using the iPad to replace your laptop or desktop pc or Mac. I think it’s important to let you know that this whole article is being written completely on an iPad and the only outside source of content will be pictures taken with my Nexus S 4g since obviously the iPad can’t take it’s own picture (yet).

Keyboard: the onscreen keyboard is the one that I am using to write this article and while it’s very responsive, it tends to be a little small for my hands to type on comfortably for an extended period of time. Also if you plan on typing in landscape mode you’ll defiantly want some kind of case that will raise the ipad up to make the angle a little less severe. The case I use is a Targus slim case (here on Amazon). Of course none of this section matters if you get a Bluetooth keyboard, however, I didnt want to carry anymore than I had to.

Screen: Just WOW. The retins display makes working with photos and text a breeze on the new iPad. Using iPhoto I was able to touch up any of the images I needed to and writing even in the sun wasn’t really that bad (no worse than my MacBook Pro).

Battery: At the time of writing this article I’ve been using the iPad to play games and surf the web for about 4 hours and I still have 60% battery left. I don’t see having any issues making the iPad last through a day at the convention or the park.

Camera: This, along with the retina display, is the main reason that I bit the bullet and finally bought an iPad. The video quality is absolutely stunning at 1080p and photos look as good as the iPhone 4S, which could be considered the gold standard of mobile cameras. Here are some quick snaps to show you what I mean.

Speed: The iPad feels faster than even my MacBook Pro (which is an i7) and I never had to wait for it to do what I wanted. Games like Infinity Blade 2 take only seconds to load and don’t have a single hiccup during gameplay.

If you’re like me and get tired of always carrying a huge bag of laptop stuff with you all of the time or if you’re looking for a new way to work and play, checkout the new iPad.
