Brandon’s Top 8 Geek Movies Of The Year

I end the year with my list of my favorite geek movie to come out in 2011, I’m including just geek movies, so things like Drive and Hobo With a Shotgun are not going to make the list, no matter how awesome they were. I know there are a few weeks left so The American, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, TinTin, and Sherlock Holmes won’t make it. I feel like they aren’t necessarily guaranteed to make the list anyway.

8. Attack The Block

Attack The Block was one of the original ideas to come out this year in a very sequel or remake or adapted screenplay year. I didn’t get to review the amazing movie, but sometimes contributor James Midgett did, here it is. I really did enjoy this, it was so different that it drew me in. Go see it.

7. Rango

Hands down my favorite animated movie of the year, it’s only competition was Kung Fu Panda 2 and possibly The Adventures of Tintin, but Kung Fu Panda 2 let me down a bit, I loved the first one, but this one, although good, lacked some of the charm from the first one. Anyway, Rango, the ugliest movie of the year, wait, did Sex in The City 2 come out in 2011? No? Okay, Rango, the ugliest movie of the year was absolutely amazing. I loved it, read my review here.

6.  Thor

A million comic book movies came out in 2011, maybe not quite a million, but I believe a solid 15 may have. Thor was one of these, I have to admit, I’m not a huge Thor fan, I never caught on to the character. I went and saw it with low expectations and was blown away. The humor was great, the action was cool, and the acting was top notch. Tim Blacksmith reviewed it here and I stand by his high rating.

5.  X-Men: First Class

X-Men 2 was amazing, one of my favorite comic book movies, but I started to lose hope after X3 and Wolverine, those were terrible movies. First class looked good and I was kind of excited, but then I watched it and was amazed, I reviewed it with Jesse here and I still hope that this begins a new trend of good X movies.

4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

I don’t like the books, I know, I know I here it all the time, but I liked the movies, then around movie five I began to love them, The final two were very dark, but my favorite, I reviewed it here. The movies are going to go down in history as one of the bravest endeavors in the movie industry, here’s hoping they try a similar path with The Dark Tower

3. Captain America: The First Avenger

I really like Captain America, I think he is an amazing character, and going in to this I was unsure, Chris Evans wasn’t known for his seriousness and Steve Rogers is a serious guy. The idea of Captain America is a bit corny by todays standards as well, so I was hoping it would translate well, it did. I know a lot of people who won’t like this above X-Men or Thor, but This is my list, so suck it. Read my review here, and remember that I was still in a daze about the horrible treatment of my favorite character Green Lantern on film

2. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Rise of the Apes, the title it should be called, was amazing. Jesse and I were enthralled from about five minutes in, usually we chat a bit during the movies to help flesh out ideas for the reviews, but not this time. If you haven’t seen this yet, rent it as soon as you can, it was amazing, read my review here, and honestly let’s get Andy Serkis an Oscar for this stuff.

1. The Muppets

Half way through The Muppets I knew it would be my movie of the year. I thought that it had the best combination of comedy, drama, action, and romance, and Muppets. This was an amazing film, I can’t wait to buy this and see the extra features. Read my review here to understand how much I loved this film.
