I wasn’t looking forward to this review. I am going to get a lot of shit from my female readers, but this book has really gone downhill. When Chuck Dixon and Gail Simone did this book it was amazing, it destroyed the female superhero stereotype and it established a strong female presence in the DC universe. This is not the same.
Duane Swierczynski (Cable, Iron Fist) who previously wrote for Men’s Health somehow got the job and he treats these female characters so badly it seemed like he had a vendetta against them. Jesus Siaz (Manhunter) does do a fantastic job of styling our female heroes and the strange assassins they are stomping, but I just could not get into this book.
I kind of like Black Canary;s redesign, it seperates her from Zatanna some which I like, we don’t really see any of the other birds except for the gun toting Starling. Starling, so you know, is one of the most two dimensional and boring characters I’ve ever seen in comics. The action depected is done well, and it flows well, that and the art are the only positive things I can really say.
I give this book a JACK and the title worst of the week, it wasn’t even in the top 5 of worst of the relaunch, but in an otherwise strong week it fails to shine.
The hooded woman was here again, this time as the most interesting character in the book.
