52 Pickup: The DC Shuffle – Supergirl

I’m going to round out my last two books in week four of my ongoing review of DC’s New 52 Reboot in sexy style.  Supergirl issue one retells the origin of how Kara El comes to earth.  Most recently this story was told in the fantastic DC series Superman & Batman.  That was a pretty sexy intro (not to mention her sexy dominatrix look from her time on Apokolips).  This new version of Kara isn’t AS sexy, but it definitely has its moments.

I’m gonna push right past the fact that according to the writer if a meteor crashed into Kansas and continued going it would end up in Russia (instead of the Indian Ocean, which is where it would actually end up) and say…it’s cool that the Russians are once again involved in super hero comics!

Kara’s back story is somewhat unknown at this point.  She recalls, at points, on her last memories but she seems to have no memory of how or why she was in the “meteor” transport that crashed on Earth.

When she first emerges she thinks it is all a dream.  She muses about how the suit she’s wearing is something that she hasn’t earned yet, because she hasn’t graduated.  But when the containment troops show up to collect and detain her she starts to feel pain, and that’s when she knows it is not a dream.

Unfamiliar with how a yellow sun will affect her and unprepared for the power it will bestow upon her, Kara destroys more than one mechanical trooper during the scuffle.  There’s an interesting scene where as all her senses start to be affected by earth’s yellow sun that super-hearing kicks in and she is flooded with voices and sounds from all over the planet.  There are three specific word balloons that pop up.  Each represents a line from one of the other New 52 books that has recently come out.

I found that very interesting.  Will there be a specific connection between Supergirl and these other titles?  Were these chosen at random or will they hold some larger purpose?  Only time will tell.

As the book winds down we see Kara starting to crack a little.  Her strength, through growing in stature is waning in spirit.  The last page, however, is of Superman hovering over the scene telling Supergirl to stop what she is doing.  I can honestly say that I am intrigued about where this title could lead.

Due to the excellent writing and the very cool art and style in which the story was presented Supergirl gets a KING rating from me!

The best is yet to come so keep your eyes (and browsers) open on 8DaysAGeek all month long as we tackle the biggest story in comics!

For now,

This is your Bin Fodder Guru Tim Blacksmith signing off.

p.s. Did you spot the hooded lady?  I’ve included a picture below.  She keeps showing up in the strangest places!  Who is she?  What’s her impact going to be on the new DCU?  Discuss below in comments!!!
