52 Pickup: The DC Shuffle – Legion Lost

A friend of mine once asked, of mid-90s JLA, “How many people are in this freaking book?”  He had a point, it was pretty out of hand at certain points.  But JLA doesn’t have anything on The Legion of Super Heroes.

Like much of what DC is doing with the New 52 Reboot, Legion Lost is a book that begins with a bang and keeps on running.  Most of you who have read Legion stories before know that much of them take place in “modern” times and involve a team of heroes travelling back in time to prevent some atrocity.  Or in the case of Legion Lost the team is tracking a villain whom has gone back in time to release a deadly pathogen meant to wipe out all life on Earth.

Legion Lost includes somewhat known characters: Dawnstar, Wildfire, Timberwolf and some less-than-known characters like: Tyroc, Tellus, Yera and Gates.

Immediately upon landing in “our time” they are faced with several difficulties.  First, their time bubble (the thing that allows them to traverse the time-space continuum) is damaged.  Second, their query is hours ahead of them and because of this has already released the pathogen.

So…essentially they’ve already failed their mission.  That’s gotta suck.

They capture Alastor, the time-travelling villain, and they head back to their time.  But Alastor flips out and breaks free of his restraints, causing the time bubble to destabilize, resulting in a deadly explosion.

Their time bubble destroyed the Legion members are stranded, with no way of returning to their own time.  Plus, a deadly pathogen has been released into Earth’s atmosphere.

This is an intriguing story, one which I am unclear where Nicieza is planning to take it.  But with any Legion story you can bet there’s going to be a lot going on and plenty of time-travel fun!

I wasn’t overly impressed with the art of the book, though the overall story makes up for some of it.  All told, though, the book deserves a QUEEN rating.

The best is yet to come so keep your eyes (and browsers) open on 8DaysAGeek all month long as we tackle the biggest story in comics!

For now,

This is your Bin Fodder Guru Tim Blacksmith signing off.
