Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple’s CEO

Steve Jobs has officially resigned from his position as Apple’s CEO.  We all knew that it would happen sooner or later, but no one wanted to see it happen.  Steve will stay on as Chairman of the Board and an Apple employee, so you know he will still have a hand in all of Apple’s operations.

Below is a copy of Steve’s resignation letter:

CUPERTINO, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)— To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computers in 1976 and since then Apple’s CEO has only changed once when Jobs was forced out by John Scully and the board.  After Jobs left Apple took a turn for the worst, with slacking sales and a stagnant product line Apple shook things up by bringing Jobs back in 1996.  Steve then lead Apple to market with product after product that topped the market.

Jobs has taken several medical leaves in recent years, but will the big man being “gone” take some of the wind out of Apple’s sails?  I think that Tim Cook has been with Apple at Steve’s side long enough to keep up “the house that Jobs built”.

We here at 8 Days a Geek wish Steve and his family the best.
