52 Pickup: The DC Shuffle – Justice League

So.  It’s finally here.  The moment so many of us have been waiting for.  DC’s big Reboot is upon us, complete with a “Nirvana’s Second Album”-esque midnight madness sale with people waiting outside comic shops in New York City for hours.  I applaud the strides DC is taking to get behind their product.  Not only are they taking a huge leap by launching with fifty-two titles, all starting with issue one, but they’ve gone same-day-digital on all their books as well.

This is a historic moment in the future of the comic book industry.

I will admit, whereas I am a man of the digital age (I get my news, sports, television and movies all from internet sites or via my Xbox 360), I am still somewhat old-fashioned when it comes to comics.  The majority of my hesitation in reading digital comics is because I have not yet embraced the tablet-PC or iPad revolution that will take the digital comics platform through the 21st century and beyond.

But enough about the new medium, let’s talk about the issue!

Justice League number one has a very fast paced opening with an action-packed sequence involving Batman and Green Lantern, the two characters whom this first issue revolves mostly around.  Batman is chattier than I can ever remember him being but Green Lantern is a perfect and shining example of the boastful and verbose character we all know and love.

Cyborg, still as Vic Stone, makes an appearance and Superman flies in as the issue concludes, complete with a smack in the mouth for Green Lantern.  Missing from the issue entirely are the remaining members of the team, Wonder Woman, Flash and Aquaman.

Superman comes across young and feisty, not at all the modest country farm-boy we have all grown up knowing.  I’ll be interested to see how this new Superman plays out and if he’ll maintain this apparent cocky attitude or if he’ll settle back into a more reserved, leadership role once the book really takes off after this first story arc which is sure to include everyone’s favorite arch-villain…Darkseid!

Only time will tell how this whole experiment the DCU is undertaking will play out, but I for one am impressed with this first salvo.  I can’t wait to read what comes next!
