X-Men: First Class Trailer Hit Today!

The new trailer for X-Men first class popped online today, and altough it looks like a ton of fun, I’m confused on the time line for this franchise. Watch below then read my complaints.

So, this shows me that the movie will take place in the early 60’s, the original triliogy started in… let’s say 2000, so 40 years must go by in order for these two stories to link. We can put Charles and Erik at about 25 if we stretch our imagination, which means in X-Men they are about 65, believable.

I guess we are to imagine that X-Men Origins: Wolverine never happened due to the existence of a 15 year old Emma Frost. I know this because Cyclops was about 30 in the original X-Men and he was 15 during Origins, so we are to believe that Emma was 15 years old 15 years ago, yet she was 25 years old 40 years ago, as seen wearing white during the trailer. Also Cyclops “younger” brother Havok is about 15 in this movie even though Cyclops wasn’t even born at this time!

Mystique get’s does not get a pass here either, why you may ask? She can make herself look young with her ability you say! Bull$#!+, she lost her powers during the third movie and was no older than 35, meaning she wasn’t even born during this story. My final complaint is that Beast shows up and he looks about 16 in this movie, meaning the Beast we see in X3 is nearly 60, which is highly unlikely.

Maybe I’m looking way to deep into this, but whatever, they could of at least tried to keep the time line straight, but okay. Well geeks other than that I need to relax, tell me what you think.

  1. I think you’re investing into it to much man. I’m a die hard fan, but you have to look at comic movies almost like an alternate universe, otherwise they’ll always be disappointing. If you want to get nit-picky and throw hate at the universe at the entire X-Men movie franchise direct it toward Brian Singer because he really messed up the story of the X-Men from the start and the age of the characters.

First I’ll throw in my disclaimer here – I don’t consider Wolverine Origins’ time frame to be accurate in reference to the X-Men franchise what-so-ever and it was even worst than Last Stand (X3) – which I absolutely hated.

I see your arguments and they’re very valid, but you’re blurring your argument a little bit. Your expecting them to have correct aged for Havok and Cyclops compared to the actual comic line.. there’s very little about comic book franchises in general that are correct in comparison to time reference, characters, and character ages (some times powers/abilities) in any of them. So you kind-of have to disregard that and refer back to the alternate universe argument. I see the Mystique point to a fair degree, but if you want to mix universes then I can refer to the argument that I read one time by one Marvel writer (who I can’t remb right now specifically who it was and I can’t find the article off hand online) but when asked why these characters aren’t aging in the real-life main story lines like we are- the answer was because they’re mutants they age slower than humans as a whole. WHICH WAS THE ULTIMATE COP-OUT that I’ve ever read.

Last Stand was an abomination from Brett Ratner in my book and I try and pretend that never even happened.

First Class a semi fresh look by Matthew Vaughn (Stardust, Layer Cake, Kick Ass – Director and he produced Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and I believe Rock’n’Rolla). In my book he’s never disappointing I love everything that man touches.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not writing this off as a success already, but by the trailer I’m hopeful. I can’t say the same about a lot of other comic movies esp. The Green Lantern that I’ve seen trailers for recently. I’ve got a bad feeling they’re going to fuck up Cap America because I don’t have a ton of faith in Joe Johnston as a director. Thor I’m a little hopeful for with the exception of Anthony Hopkins’ gay-ass metal eye patch.

This isn’t an in depth rebuttal, but just an avocation for- “we’ll wait and see..”

  2. I see what you say, but my problem is that they are selling it as an accurate time line, which bothers men. If it was a reboot, fine, I don’t mind reboots. Matthew Vaughn isn’t the problem either, It’s just that with such a large catalog of characters to choose from you’d think they would pick some original characters. I can get over the Emma argument considering Origins was …. well, it was a movie. I’m even okay with the idea of Havok being an older brother of 10+ years, my major issue is the mystique/beast argument, at this point I’m supposed to imagine that both Origins and X3 have never existed that seems like a horrible cop put. Vaughn’s writers could of put some thought into this and made them link together. Like I said in the beginning, I think it looks fun. I don’t blame Vaughn or Singer, I don’t blame anyone, but the writers. As for Joe Johnston, other than Wolfman I think he has a decent history, but I liked The Rocketeer.

  3. Barret, I am with you on how Green Lantern looks like it could be bust. I just can’t get that excited, but I will see it and I hope I love it.

Joe Johnston may not be the best director out there, but he did do the Rocketeer, which I thought was solid and the era is the same. I’m hoping the guy kills it.

  4. I liked The Rocketeer too, but everything else of his not much a fan of. He’s hasn’t done enough good as he has bad for me. He also keeps citing Indiana Jones: Raiders of The Lost Ark for references of his Captain America work- which makes me cringe a little. Captain America isn’t really a whimsical Action/Adventure story for me- it’s about this guy who gave the ultimate sacrifice only to wake up (eventually) in a World alien to his perception of reality.

BUT BACK TO X-MEN: Part of that was the basis of my actual thoughts, but mostly playing devils advocate. You can make fans jump through whatever hoops you want to I suppose, as long as you can sell the over picture. There are clear holes in the ages/timelines there’s no arguing that. The only thing I don’t agree with really is already expecting the worst from this and really paying close attention to X:3 and Wolverine Origins for some kind of relation to this story mainly because Singer was as involved with those- as he was X I and X II (I know he had producing credits in the others, but I think they would have turned out different and casted different with him at the helm). I mean seriously Deadpool had every power of every mutant in the Weapon X experiments.. NIGGAH PLEASE!

  5. I also meant to add your argument about better characters to enlist- are my exact feeling for almost every comic movie.

I’m really scratching my head at Nolan’s selection for Villains in TDKR. I love everyone of his movies, but I think there are some other characters that really would have closed out his trilogy better.

Black Mask, Hush/Thomas Elliot, Riddler, bringing back Two-Face, Tila Alghul and weird/twisted spin on Penguin.

  6. Not fan boying you, but it’s Talia Al Ghul, but she’s C list and Ra’s is my fave bat villain so there’s really no reason to remember that.

True again, but even disregarding X3 and Origins, X2 had a beast cameo and was a 30 year old man, no blue fur. As an individual movie I think it’s going to be great, as a prequel it will be confusing.

Different argument completly though, Hidalgo, October Sky, Jumanji, Rocketeer, Pagemaster, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, and design work on Indiana Jones and Star Wars. When you sprinkle in some crap his career looks like almost any other good director. Matthew Vaughn directed Layer Cake which was a good story, but boring otherwise, and he helped with possibly the worst movie ever, Swept Away, so every director has mistakes.

    Debates are fun.

  7. Yeah I was totally not paying attention or reviewing what I typed.. I know her name. I hunt a peck like a mother fucker so I often make mistakes- please disregard and bear with me.

I think if they felt like they had to have a love interest so bad she would have been perfect any they could have focused more so on male villains and closing out Nolan’s version of Bats. Also I don’t ever feel impressed with Nolan’s female casting (I consider his only flaw- leave out Carrie-Ann Moss is Moment, thought she was fine). Marion Cotillard would have been a perfect cast as a female love interest/villain/lead but she had to go get preggers.

Johnson’s directing resume doesn’t impress me as much as Vaughn’s, just my personal opinion. I don’t care for any of his movies expect Rocketeer- doesn’t mean he’s not accomplished.

These are all obviously our personal preferences/opinions/perceptions on all of this- so it’s all subjective.

  8. correction MEMENTO

  9. true, and I’m on board for Nolan bashing when it comes to women, it’s like he feels attractive women can’t act. Marion Cotillard was the most attractive and she was just okay. I know movies don’t always need big boobs, but Christian Bale and Maggi Gylenhaal, the only way would be if he were blind as a bat as well.

By the way singer just said this in a press release:

When reminded of the prequel’s fairly different line-up from the comics,“We have younger versions of Mystique and Beast, so I’m very excited about them and what they bring to the film. Jennifer Lawrence’s work [as Mystique] and Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Beast — these are characters that we’ve seen in the earlier films, but then these are very different portrayals and you have to bring a lot of attention to those.”

“I’m also excited about Jason Flemyng as Azazel, which is really cool character. It’s like this sinister alter ego of Nightcrawler in a way, which again brings some of the things that we like about that character but at the same time has a different quality. And I really, really like [Lucas Till as] Havok, who we’re bringing in [to the continuity] at a sort of a different time, relative to the comic book lore. It’s an extremely cool character. What’s great, too, about all of these characters is that they haven’t honed their abilities yet. Havok is a danger to himself and everyone around him. That’s where this movie is at — the recruiting of these mutants and bringing them together.”

When questioned of Havok & Cyclops’ “brother” relation, “Yes, the time line is different,” Singer said. “It wouldn’t physically fit for him to be the brother of Cyclops. We take some liberties on that. There are notions, but, um, I don’t want to give away certain interrelations, but let’s just say there are some things that do adhere to the comic books and do so in a way the fans will get a kick out of. And those things can, perhaps, move forward into the future…. That’s one reason we wanted to call the film ‘First Class’ even though it isn’t the [Jeff Parker-penned story arc called] ‘First Class’ in the comics as fans know it. You couldn’t really tell that story without going even earlier and explaining how they got there and how it came to be. I liked the title, so we kept it, but this is a prelude in a way that will eventually lead to the [scenarios] that fit in more clearly with the ‘First Class’ comics and situations.”

He’s most of the problem, and this excuse is kinda lame, you gotta admit.

I hunt and peck too, F#&K typing lessons.

  10. Great debate man, we should do this as an article!

  11. He pointed out (addressed) your points, yes. I also think he kind-of argued mine.. LOL. So yes he confused everyone very effectively. ROFL.

In a perfect world they would have staffed Stan Lee or Claremont (with great X-Men history) as a character biographical consultant and kept true to those aspects. But, they didn’t. EPIC FAIL.

  12. Claremont would of been awesome.

  13. Yeah I think Stan is a little off his rocker as of late.

  14. Yeah… I just like looking at James McAvoy. A lot. Hoping for an entertaining movie.

  15. I can actually explain some of this;

They obviously re-wrote the story so that Alex Summers is the older brother and Scott the younger one. Which is something they’ve done in all the movies, like making Rogue and Iceman children in the original movie.

There is absolutely no problem with Mystique, her shapeshifting powers make her age at a much slower rate, which has been stated in the comics, and was stated in the movie. And they showed you both of Nightcrawler’s parents Azazel and Mystique.

As for Emma Frost her character has changed and evolved throughout the Comics, originally she had no diamond skin and was only a telepath. She gained the diamond ability later. It has never been stated that Emma ages slower then others but could be possible due to her mutation.
